Jon Gilbert Leavitt is a music composer and sound designer for film, television, commercial and industrial projects, and live stage productions. He composes under his music publishing company, JGLSongs, as well as other music licensing firms, and is based in New York, NY.
Jon first arranged and performed music featured in the documentary My Dinner With Abbie (1991), featured at the Berlin and L.A. Film Festivals, and aired on PBS television; he has since composed music appearing in numerous film as well as television, stage and commercial projects. He was awarded the John Muir Award from the Yosemite Film Festival (2009) for original music in the television series Tales from the Trail.
Jon composed music for the New York stage production Oh, Those Beautiful Weimar Girls (2008-10), Hypnotik: The Seer Will Doctor You Now (2011), and Garden of Delights (2012) through the New Stage Theatre Company (New York) and presented at Off-off Broadway theatres La Mama e.t.c.,, and Theatre for the New City.
His music also appears in the web series Child of the 70's as well as music appearing in numerous broadcast television programs in the US, Canada and Europe.. Currently, he is the head composer for the TV series BoysTown, which is currently in its second season, being broadcast in Canada and Europe. In addition, he will compose for the upcoming television series (in pre-production) "Some Kind of Wonderful."
His single Pride and its successor Pride 2009 received worldwide airplay, print mentions and garnered radio interviews. The original was named #1 Song of the Year 2000 on the Outvoice™ Top-40 Tracks Chart, and was named by "Queer Vinyl" on KPFK Los Angeles as one of the ten queer songs that "shaped our musical history." The 2009 version is accompanied by a video, which is currently being slated for North American broadcast television. Jon's own releases include 1919 (2008) and Pride at 40 (2009).
On radio, Jon has been featured on numerous radio programs in the U.S. and Europe. In print, Jon's been featured in Billboard, many local, regional and national publications, as well as in Ed Karvoski, Jr.'s 2002 book Award Winning Men. He is a member of Outmusic™, in which he won 'Outstanding Songwriter' and was nominated for 'Outmusician Of The Year' in the first annual Outmusic (OMA) Awards, 2001, was a 2004 OMA nominee for Out Song (Proud and Free), and a 2009 nominee for Outstanding Producer and Outstanding Instrumental/Soundtrack Composer as well as a Stonewall Society Pride Award recipient in 2002.
Jon is a full writer member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), in which he received numerous ASCAPlu$™ awards, and a publisher member (JGLsongs).
