About Brian

Brian Knox McGugan (actor, director, vocal performer and theatre maker) was born in Calgary Alberta, graduated from the University of Alberta BFA (acting) program in 1987 & frequently appears in film & television and theatre.

Brian worked extensively behind the camera in several departments including camera, learning the filmmaking process in hands on, sweaty detail, including a gig for many months with John Frankenheimer on Reindeer Games, starring Ben Afflick. He traveled to Alberta the summer of 1999 as video co-ordinater for Texas Rangers 2nd unit, starring Dyan McDermott, James Van der Beek and Usher, and In Toronto he was video co-ordinator on many large projects over 2 years, including Angel Eyes with Jennifer Lopez, Exit Wounds with Stephen Segal and the Backstreet Boys’ colossal Burger King commercial. Back in Vancouver he worked behind the scenes on hundreds of commercials, TV and Features over the years, including 2 spots with Ringo Starr and a massive budget Mercury campaign with Kate Jackson.

Brian Knox McGugan played “Jeff” in "Motifs & Repetitions" a short play featured at UBC's Brave New Playwrights festival, & was so intrigued by this haunting & poetic work of theatre that he then produced, directed & starred in the film adaptation, which was subsequently licensed to Bravo Channel & Knowledge Network.

Brian believes that we must create our own work, nurture our artistic relationships and community, always come from a place of risk and fearless originality, and thus produce nothing less than world-class works of the highest level of excellence.

Past work includes Anne Wheeler's Cowboys Don't Cry, MacGyver, Highlander, The X Files, Bordertown & The Death of the Hulk, Don’t Look Back (Melissa Gilbert). More recently in his continuing quest for excellence and cultivating relationships in the independent film community, Brian has performed in many independent films including lead roles in Kevin Tyson's feature "PLUS", as Valentino in Christoph Kositza’s feature, “Old Traditions”, the supporting lead character: “The Boss” in Kristian Messere’s feature, "Stockholders",” the lead in George Allen's short film, "Franks Case” and a supporting lead in the Indy “Gaygency”. Brian co-starred with Curtis Caravaggio in the WW2 short, "Ghosts of Europe" (best international film, 168 festival L.A. 2012), playing the eerily nefarious Nazi “SS Brigadefürer Ernst Reiner”, for which he was nominated best supporting actor. He won outstanding performer award for the short indy, "Sunday Morning", which screened at the Rio theatre, and again at the Vancouver Queer film festival's: "Coast is Queer". He plays “Salavan” the dark chemist in Nikki Wallin's apocalyptic fantasy pilot: "The Children of Pellah", and appeared in the series, “Fringe” & "Once Upon A Time"

Brian Knox McGugan is honoured to be represented by Dean Osman & Maijah Lewk agency in Vancouver, whose tireless work, energy and unconditional support are outstanding. Brian himself is continuously committed to raising the bar as a performer and artist through work, exploration & professional study in music, theatre & film.
