I agree, Patrick. Also, understanding the craft means comprehending the heart of filmmaking, which is to engage the audience. A Red One can do that and so can a DSLR. This means the focus is not on the equipment but the story and experience it brings out of the viewer.

It is a great opportunity for really low budget filming. But the unintended out of focus moments in cinematic movement with a DSLR are telling and so often the glass is not high enough quality and a zoom lens rather than a good set of primes.

Good point Edwin, but I was responding to the technical question. If we are going to that point , then I would take something shot on a iPhone and decent sound design and ADR over a nicely shot film with bad sound. (like so many student and amateur efforts have) And with a good script and artful design and great acting , you can do something good on an iPhone.. but you are not likely to do so. You want to chose a camera that is practical within your budget and I advise to know go too cheap on the camera department or you might waste all the rest of the efforts in your well-designed and well-executed production.

Well, gee, I dunno. I know of at least five TV Series that are shot on DSLR's (particularly the 7D), and many an Indie Movie is shot on them. They're easier to handle and easier to Post with. I'm planning on shooting my Indie projects with one. Only the Big Features still shoot celluloid.

but as you say Simon, the cost difference of 15,000 USD or so is not a risk you might be willing to take in a feature budgeted at a few million USD. But it is dreadfully critical to the semi-pro. Depends upon the production and the intended distribution.

A webisode is a short. Every film festival has entry into those. Some also specialize in just web series. If you do a little research you should be able to find the right one for your piece.

I'm not being facetious when I say that you really have to adopt an attitude of "fuck all, fuck everyone" when you're writing b/c otherwise you are going to get in your way by letting them get in your way. You will go mad thinking, and trying to produce, what they want. You will also fail if you approach your writing this way. Remember, agents and producers and their ilk are nothing without good writing. Nothing. And they know that. I know it sounds almost paradoxical to say this, but: you're in control, dude. You can write; they can't. Oh, sure, they're often nasty, and they turn people down for representation and they don't return calls and all the rest, but they're nothing without your writing. And one day, after years of struggle and suffering -- like I endured -- you'll see them at Barney's helping you try on a pair of new Italian loafers or opening the door to your new 2-door sporty export and asking you if you'd like the Corinthian leather or not.

I never start out to write for them, but I'm not stupid enough to believe that a certain kind of story that has zero commercial appeal is worth beating my head against the with. If that makes any sense.

Take my advise, I never use it... Didn't really make the connection until the end. Might have been funnier the other way around; where he cleans and cooks, etc for Dorito chips and then is amazed that he can get the dog to do a trick for Dorito... wife smiles and pets her husband? Also, the label wasn't seen enough. It didn't tie in with Superbowl too well. Maybe the dog trick should involve something really impossible with a football? Im no writer, producer or camera person so please pardon my non professional take. Good luck.

Interesting take. I'm certain that it could be funny if we had inverted the setup/payoff. We chose to not have the audience in on the joke, so if you were to make the connection before the callback, it would be like getting the joke before the punchline was delivered.
