Happy Sunday, Creative Army!
Have you had a creative weekend so far? I have some content here for you that is sure to get the creative juices flowing, so grab your coffee, and let's dive in.
First up, in this video from StudioBinder, they’re breaking down seven essential elements of directing by one of this generation’s stellar auteurs, Sofia Coppola, and how she uses them to create a sense of isolation around lost protagonists. From the plot level, production design, color choices, post-production, sound design, music, and cinematography, few filmmakers can create an introspective mood or dreamy headspace like Sofia Coppola. All of us have felt lost or alone, which is why these small, intimate portraits of similar individuals resonate.
Next up, I am absolutely fired up for Cannes this year! Even for first-timers, there is so much opportunity there. Every year I have gone, I am more prepared for the next one. In this video, I share how you can maximize your time at the Cannes Film Festival.

Thanks for sharing this, RB. I was just trying to think what the average budget seems to be outside of the likes of Marie Antoinette. It seems to be around $10m, save from Lost in Translation at $4m. It seems to be around $10m, save from Lost in Translation at $4m. Im just looking at her box office returns too and thinking what can be made for $10m. Sorry, just thinking out loud here and not very coherently. Apologies. My point, if I have one, is that - maybe - Sofia Coppola is creating auteur films that make a pretty decent ROI. Maybe (there's that word again) she is showing the way for Indie film production in a tough economic climate? Or shouldn't we think of her as an Indie filmmaker because of her father?

Really inspiring video, RB. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Sophia is inspired! This video gave me great ideas for infusing visual elements to heighten emotional underpinnings of scenes. Hope you're having a blast!

Love hearing the vids hit the mark, Robin Gregory. And thank you...we're off to a tremendous start at Cannes.

Setting a story in an isolated location also cuts down on the budget because there’s only one character, two characters, or a few characters as opposed to crowded locations like an apartment building, a store during operating hours, and a city park. Or a writer could create a sense of isolation by putting a character inside an area in a big/crowded location, like a teen who’s on punishment and can’t leave their bedroom.

"Isolation"! Significant subject! It's a main component of film and life in general! How do we address it in film and life certainly defines reality. Expand commentYou're welcome RB! In my best explanations, it's one of the most sensitive and "A must", to be addressed in filmmaking! In my short film I've certainly included amongst the beginning scenes the topic, (posted in video section in my bio, some time ago) to get opinions for new aspiring films and preparing to be in the upcoming contest. It's also one of the most difficult /aint no easy feat subjects, in film to address and attaining the respects of both the professional and ordinary critics. Again certainly impressive for the blog presentation!

Expand postGood morning, RB. I’ve been resting the weekend, but I also managed to get some writing done and network. I picked up advice from the first video on how to create isolation in my scripts. It’s incredible how screenwriters, filmmakers, and crew departments can use things like color, production design, music, etc. to create isolation in stories, make the audience feel different emotions, show a character’s emotional state, create mystery and doubt, so on. Great advice on how to maximize time at Cannes! Safe travels to everyone who’s going. Hope everyone has a fun time networking and hanging out! Fantastic videos members should check out, RB. Thanks for sharing.
