Coffee & Content: Trailers and Shorts

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? I have some content here for you that is sure to get the creative juices flowing, so grab your coffee, and let's dive in.

First, Vox is breaking down the art of making trailers with help from editor Bill Neil who works with Buddha Jones. Neil works on some of the biggest movies of recent years, including Jordan Peele's NOPE, and breaks down why he makes the choices he does, how to make a bigger impact by combining different elements, and shows how wide the references are that he pulls from to create something that can be memorable for audiences.

Next up, we're switching from trailers to short films with this video from Movie LUTs. This video breaks down the five biggest elements that separate the look of the short film WHIPLASH from the feature film of the same name, both written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Even though WHIPLASH's visual style was amplified in the feature film version, that doesn't mean that you can't use these great techniques to tell a more compelling visual story in a short film right now. And for more guidance on how to make a great short film, be sure to check out this great class from an award-winning short filmmaker.

Lastly, Wes Anderson's latest film, ASTEROID CITY, released its first trailer this week, and I can't wait to see the full feature this summer. This last video is for both fans of Wes Anderson and the storytellers joining today's Coffee & Content, as it's a "video essay" on the rewards and demands of the life of the writer using the films of Anderson, from 101 Things I Learned About Fiction From Film.
