Rules vs. Flow in Songwriting

I’ve watched a few YouTube videos where songwriters talk about the writing process like it’s rocket science — chord progressions, rhyming schemes, and all the rules you “should” follow. That works for them, and I respect it.

But I’ll be honest — I have zero desire to learn the “proper” songwriting process. I never know in advance exactly what words will come out, and often I don’t even know the theme until I’m already writing. Songs like Southern Gold or Trailer Park Royalty just revealed themselves in the moment.

For me, the joy is in letting creativity run wild. No fences, no corrals, no rules to hem it in. My brain is wired for flow, not formulas — and that’s what makes the songs feel alive for me.

Some people need structure, some need freedom. Neither is better, but I’ll take freedom every time.

How about you? Do you thrive inside the rules, or outside them?

Remember, @Wyman-- there's no "wrong way" to make music. It's been around long before any rules, and it will last past them. At least to me, it's the most pure form of expression.

Libby Wright, you are right. Still, I wonder if some will think my song Didgeridoo Dementia is the wrong way to make music.
