Hello! My name is Zachary and I write contemporary drama and comedy. I'm 28 years old and have been writing short films and feature screenplays for 3-4 years. I currently reside in Phoenix, Arizona. I've also produced some "mini shorts" that I made as a one-man band to practice coverage, editing and simple storytelling. I acted in them or used my brother (nothing crazy). Now, I'm looking to evolve and work with talent/crew for what I consider my "real" projects!
I recently completed a two-act drama play that I'm trying to work out the next steps for as well. I'm unrepresented and in the process of finding the right places to get my work read.
While I've had my Stage 32 profile for some time, I haven't been active on here as I felt the need to hone my craft as a storyteller first. Now that I'm over my "imposter syndrome" and stacked up a few projects, I'm finally here to introduce myself and network! I am looking to connect with others and receive any tips/advice. All is welcome!

You're welcome, Zachary Weber. A two-act drama play sounds interesting. I've never heard of one. Which two Acts are in the play?

Maurice Vaughan It's definitely unique in its structure and the two-act structure just seemed to work out for it. I didn't want to force anything in the story. They aren't very common but I originally wrote it as a short film but since it's one location and a ton of dialogue and wanted to try a play. It turned out way better in my opinion. It takes place in an apartment so the first act is in the living room and the second is in the bedroom.

Vincent Turner Ha very true! I'm happy to have overcome it. It started when I received poor coverage on my first screenplay so I knew I had a lot of work to do. Maybe imposter syndrome isn't the right diagnosis lol.

Is it up to the audience to decide how the story ends since the play doesn't have a third act, Zachary Weber?

Hey Zachary Weber - welcome back! Glad you decided to stay. And congrats on that two-act drama!! Even better that you're happy with its execution. We all struggle with work we've just completed so I'm glad you're happy with it.

Zachary Weber it's the third Thursday of every month, so April 17th will be the net one, unless something changes. It's super informal, and there's a good vibe. There aren't many other writers who go there consistently either, so it'll be cool to have you come! I want to here more about your play. Phoenix needs more going on in its indie theater scene.

Maurice Vaughan In a way, yes. I love an ambiguous ending and it is one for sure. The goal was for the idea to continue to "live in the head" of the audience, almost creating a discussion. Where they question what is right or wrong for these characters. But traditionally speaking, a two-act structure is just a story divided into two main sections.

Thank you, Leonardo Ramirez! Happy to be back, it seems like a really great community on here! But I agree, it feels good to be happy with it. It's gone through some rewrites where I wasn't able to say the same lol.

David Michael Kelly Awesome, thank you! What time is it usually at? I'd be happy to discuss the play and the concept, especially with other writers and get some feedback too. I did a table read that went well (with actors) but you're right, the Phoenix theater scene seems scarce. Not having a theater background and trying to get a feel for the scene here, I've noticed that. Especially for drama.

I like ambiguous endings, Zachary Weber, but sometimes I just wanna know how a story ends. I might try a two-act play. Thanks for the idea. Keep us posted on your play. Looking forward to hearing what you decide to do with it! And keep us posted on your other projects.
