Hollywood Contraction: How Writers Are Reacting To Ongoing Industrywide Cost-Cutting
The ongoing contraction in Hollywood continues to impact how many writers remain out of work since walking off the picket line in September.

No pilot season is a big shift.

Thanks for sharing, Martin Reese. One thing I'm doing is focusing on micro-budget and low-budget spec scripts. I have some mid-budget and big-budget spec ideas, but I'm holding off on those right now. A lot of producers and companies are looking for scripts with lower budgets. That's not to say some producers and companies aren't looking for mid-budget and big-budget specs. If I had any interest in directing or producing, I'd do those things.

Pat Alexander

Yeah that's a good strategy @Maurice that applies to a lot of writers. The way the market is right now, every writer should try to have one low-budget spec on hand and even one micro-budget spec (1-2 locations, under 10 characters), if possible. There's a lot of talented indie producers out there who want to make movies but need something reasonably scaled down to make it happen.

Seems like a smart approach, Maurice, given what's going on with the majors. Good luck!

Pamela Jaye Smith

Agreed, Pat.

Also, keep in mind the strong market in Web Series. You're in control and distribution portals are plentiful. The LAWEBFEST (the original Web Fest) is May 2-3 here in Hollywood.
