Scene Idea/Script Idea Exercise – Sports Events

Take a sports event and come up with a scene or script about it. Like a Rom-Com scene that takes place at a March Madness game or a Thriller script about a minor league basketball tournament.

Wal Friman

Did you all know that Ratatouille is into basket these days? He's in Oklahoma and has climbed up to move the basket sideways - makes sure that the not so accurate shots either go in or bounce back out.

Thanks, Foster West. What are you working on? And I suggest adding a profile picture and a detailed bio to your profile. People will feel more comfortable networking and collaborating with you if they know what you look like. And if you have a picture, your profile will show up when someone searches for you. A detailed bio will help you build relationships/network on here. You could add things to your bio like why you became a writer, your accomplishments, your goals, and what movies and shows you like.

Maurice Vaughan

I didn't know that, Wal Friman. Sounds like it could be a movie or mobile game.

Mark Deuce

Too sad Maurice Vaughan to write, My Lakers Lost and are out.

Maurice Vaughan

Maybe turn it into a script, Mark Deuce. I'd make up my own team instead of using the Lakers though.

Title: Inning of The Damned

Logline: When the best players gather for Earth’s ultimate game, only Maliki stands between humanity and extinction at the hands of the shadows.

Ext-Shadowdome-Twilight

Clouds swirling with unnatural energy. The arena glows with a cold, blue-black light. A scoreboard floats midair, its numbers shifting, the words “FINAL TOURNEY: EARTH VS. THE SHADOWS” burning bright above the diamond.

MALIKI, mid-30s, laces his cleats in silence. His teammates—Earth’s best—watch him with dread and reverence. He’s the last batter, their final hope.

Maliki

Maliki looks around at the stadium of shadows. He taps his cleats three times with his bat to shake off the dust.

Alright. I can’t let these guys down.

He looks around at the loaded bases. He looks back at the forlorn faces in the dugout.

Maliki: Shit, can I do this? I mean, what if I fail?

Voice from the dugout interrupts his thoughts

Teammate: Hey Maliki, our fate is in your hands. You're all we've got. Bring us in, man. If you get home, then we go home. I mean, there will be a home.

Maliki

Gives a nod of understanding, loosens his shoulders, and steps up to the plate. He readies himself for the pitch. The ball speeds towards him; he swings and misses

Umpire: Stri…..ke one.

Teammate: Keep your eye on the ball. Concentrate. I know it’s got some heat to it. But you have to clock in.

Maliki: (Takes a deep breath) okay, okay.

The crowd of shadows begins to murmur. A droning buzz begins to sweep across the stadium. Maliki readies himself. The pitcher winds up and throws the ball.

Umpire: Stri….ke two

Maliki looks around at the bases his teammates are beginning to shake

Collective voices: C’mon man! Please, Maliki you have to save us! Watch the damn ball! If you don’t bring us home, it’s over.

Maliki wipes the sweat from his brow. He says a prayer.

Maliki: (To self) What have I done? I just hope that what’s on the other side is worth it. I know my team would never forgive me, the world … I can’t be the one who brought on Judgement day.

Maliki picks up his bat, but he doesn’t step to the plate. He walks to the dugout and hands the bat to his teammate.

Maliki: Swing, just do it. I will not be responsible for this. I can’t carry the blood of the world on my hands.

Teammate: Man, I… I!

Maliki: Just do it. It may be the only way that we have a chance and everyone lives to see another day.

Murmurs of the shadows begin to swell.

Do it, damn- it!

Teammate takes the bat from Maliki’s hand. He walks out of the dugout. Maliki behind him.

Teammate: I hope this works.

He gets in position

One, two, three (he swings)

There is commotion among the crowd of shadows. There is silence from Maliki

Announcer I: It seems that Maliki has forced a forfeit. He lost his mind over this. But this isn’t over; this is the last chance tournament. And it’s the Ides of March, baby.

Announcer 2: Kind of gives a whole new meaning to get your head in the game. But It looks like Maliki might have bought Earth some time. Will it work? Will the terrestrials be able to stop judgement day.

Announcer 1: I don’t know. I don’t know. But you have got to admit it’s a bold and risky move.

Great concept and suspenseful scene, Renae Richardson. "You're all we've got. Bring us in, man. If you get home, then we go home. I mean, there will be a home." Talk about pressure! I can see this being an actual movie. It reminds me of a futuristic American football script I started working on a little while back. The tricky think is figuring out the new rules and things for the game.

Mark Deuce

That is a great idea Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Mark Deuce.
