Traditional ROM-Coms vs Christmas Rom-Com

Are traditional rom-coms dead or at least in a lull? I have a story that can work as either a traditional rom-com or could be adapted to a Hallmark Channel style Christmas movie and I am waffling on which direction to go. I don’t see any of the upcoming pitch sessions with traditional rom coms. I do see a few holiday pitch sessions. is there a buying season for holiday scripts?

thanks

Rose Willow

I think there have been a few good ones lately…. ‘Something from Tiffany’s’ and ‘Your Place or Mine’ are a good blend of what you want without being cheesy and staying relevant and down to earth…

There's a lot of Christmas content coming out these days for sure! They can be simpler and easier to make thanks to lower audience expectations for easy holiday fun, rather than the high stakes of putting your heart out on the line!

Again, just write what you're passionate about. Forget marketing. That is not your job. Number 1 goal is to write fantastic writing samples that get ppl excited to meet you. Maybe they hire you to write their ideas.

(Btw, Hallmark movies are done in-house; their company ideas. But there a few prod co's that make Hallmark type movies).

I've heard this many times - do not write for the current trends. As Dan suggests - write what your passionate about. Great ideas spawn creative writing more than anything else, IMO.
