Short news piece produced by HND Television students in their first year of college exploring the market town of Dalkeith, Edinburgh. While I was taking part in the HNC Television course at Jewel & Esk College, a further education course, I was involved with a short news report focusing on the town of Dalkeith in Midlothian, Scotland. My role on the Valley college project was Camera Operator. The piece was Directed by Rosie Montgomery. Robyn Smith worked on this video as the Presenter and carried out the interview of news from Dalkeith Country Park, one of the best parks in the UK. Dalkeith is one of the market towns in the UK, Midlothian, Scotland which is located on the River North Esk. The town grew from a settlement from it's original 12th century castle called Dalkeith Palace. It's population currently is around 11,000. The town is split into four district areas; the town centre with a historic background, Eskbank to it's West and Woodburn to it's East. The Eskbank side of Dalkeith features many large Victorian houses where to the south of Eskbank is Newbattle and it's abbey. The Woodburn estate is a contrast being a working class council estate which was built from 1935 onwards. There is an estate called Thornyhall on the edges of Dalkeith next to an industrial estate near the Dalkeith campus where the high schools of Dalkeith and St Davids are. Dalkeith is home to the junior football club Dalkeith Thistle. The club unfortunately consistently finishes bottom two in the East Region South Division. The Dalkeith Ladies Club was formed in 2005 where they have won the Scottish 3rd Division in the seasons, 2005 and 2006. They also finished as Scottish 2nd Division runners up in 2006 and 2007. The most current season sees them playing in the Scottish 1st Division. Their current manager is the ex Scotland Captain and Arsenal Player, Pauline MacDonald. Dalkeith markettown is also home to the Dalkeith RFC Rugby team which is an amalgamation of two amateur rugby clubs, Dalkeith High School Fps and Dalkeith Rugby Football Club. The team plays in the Scottish Rugby Union East Leagues. It was the first club in Midlothian to open full membership to women as well as being the first in the country to run a women's side. Well known players have included; Sir David Murray who went on to become the President of the Scottish Rugby Union. There are bus services which run to Dalkeith, a market town which include Lothian Buses numbers, 3, 40 and 49 in addition to the First Edinburgh buses and Munros of Jedburgh. The River Esk is a river which flows through Midlothian and East Lothian in Scotland. It initially runs as two separate rivers, the North Esk and the South Esk. The North Esk rises in the North Esk Reservoir in the Pentland Hills, in Midlothian, a mile north of the village of Carlops. It flos North-East past Penicuik, Auchendinny, through Roslin Glen, past Hawthornden Castle, Polton, Lasswade and Melville Castle. The South Esk rises at the southernmost extremity of Midlothian, on the western slopes of Blackhope Scar which is the highest of the Moorfoot Hills. It flows North through Gladhouse Reservoir and Rosebery Reservoir, and through the village of Temple, Midlothian, before receiving the Redside Burn close to Arniston House. It is joined by the Gore Water and then the Dalhousie urn, just to the West of Newtongrange, before passing Newbattle Abbey and proceeding through Dalkeith park country. The rivers converge just aout 2km North East of Dalkeith at the edge of the grounds of Dalkeith Palace. From here the River Esk continues for about 7km, flowing into the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh, East Lothian, another new market town. The Dalkeith Country Park offers many wildlife sights which include; otters, badgers and roe deer which can be found in the waterways and woodland. Sometimes, you can hear foxes at night and barn owls looking for a mate. Also, keep a firm lookout for a chaffinch or heron. It's one of the great places to visit in Scotland and one of the best Scotland parks in Scotland. There are various walks available inside British Dalkeith Country Park which include the Bluebell Walk, the Ancient Oaks Walk, the King's Gate Walk and Riverside Walk. It's a great place for cycling too and for a barbeque in the warmer months.
