Screenwriting for the "new actor" -

Hey Guys - I have a bunch of actor-friends who are looking for material to shoot for the purposes of their reel. Looking for juicy, meaty scenes and/or shorts...anything that would be used as their acting calling card. Any ideas on where to solicit material? They might even be willing to pay a small fee. It seems the footage from student film hasn't been cutting it, or the latest indie they shot is stuck in post. Any ideas would be helpful. THANKS!!!

Mikhail Zislis

Randa, take a look at https://www.reddit.com/r/producemyscript/ . Cheers.

Randa Karambelas

Will do Mikhail. THANK YOU!

Andy Bethea

Randa, I would be happy to send you guys some shorts, commercials or write something they have had ideas about. Please let me know how I can help. Thanks

Randa Karambelas

Just sent you an email directly Andy. THANK YOU! Looking forward to speaking!

Randa, seeking script submissions or to solicit scripts on Stage 32 is best done in the JOBS section. So, perhaps try placing your post there. The Screenwriting section is for topic discussion. :) Best to you!

Randa Karambelas

Thanks for your thoughts Beth. I wasn't considering this a JOB per say, but maybe it is. It is a topic up for discussion, brainstorming ideas, like the suggestion of Reddit, a new outlet I didn't have exposure too before. Or even ideas of commercials as a snip-it to consider. But thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate that too. Maybe a job post would be good.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Randa, the Jobs section works just fine for this purpose -- you can specify if this is paid, or not. You mentioned your actor-friends might pay a small fee. We (Stage 32) prefer to keep solicitation out of the forums. Have you posted in the Acting section? Perhaps other actors would share what has worked for them. Also, you could try SimplyScripts.com. Or, you could do a general member search on Stage 32 by occupation and find screenwriters that way -- reach out to someone in particular. Many writers post their work on their personal pages. Either way there are plenty of options. :)

@Randa: Most screenwriters post loglines, synopsis's or entire scripts on their profiles. Message the screenwriter if you see something you like. @Beth: No solicitations in forums? That hasn't stopped Danny Manus or any number of screenplay consultants.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Yes, we prefer an organic approach, which Danny and others do do. The solicitation that I'm referring to here within this thread is asking for script submissions -- posting a sort of "want ad," if you will.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Peter, read over the site's Terms of Use. And, please look over the site's position on spam and self-promotion -- found in the Help section, under "Frequently Asked Questions."

Tony Cella

@Beth If that's the case, users post the equivalent of ads when they seek to arrange script swaps. Script consultants advertises their service in threads even when there are disclaimers at the top asking them not to post, for example: https://www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting/Professional-Notes There's nothing organic about their means of promotion. They pop up in threads and solicit business, often multiple times: https://www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting/Blacklist-Evaluations This is an opportunity to gain exposure and possibly produced without cramming a cover letter into 400 characters in the jobs section. Banning this type of call for submissions, while allowing consultants to solicit paid services from users in the same threads, is a disservice to Stage 32's screenwriting community.

Thank you CJ, I will check out inktip! And thanks everyone else. One of my friends, privately, recommended The Crop Shoppe inNYC - they do everything from write the script, shoot it and cut the reel. It costs about $800 and the scripts were a little slow, but it could work for some of my friends. BUT I will be sure to check out inktip too. THANKS ALL!

Randa, also check out the Shootin' The Shorts section of Simply Scripts: http://www.simplyscripts.com/category/scripts-available-for-production/

Randa Karambelas

Will do. Thanks CJ!

What CJ said, especially Shootin The Shorts, some real quality shorts reviewed there...
