Introduce Yourself : Hello from an old fart! by Paul Sokal

Paul Sokal

Hello from an old fart!

I turn 70 in a few months and started screenwriting about 18 months ago. Since my first script, I've become addicted. Today, I finished the first draft of my seventh script. I've done pretty well in competitions and now I'm just trying to take my career to the next level. At my age, I can't count on having a lot of time to fool around getting a script made into a movie. I'm hoping that becoming a part of this awesome creative community will help.

Welcome to the community, Paul Sokal. Congratulations on finishing the first draft of your 7th script!

Stage 32 has a ton of resources to get your career to the next level. I suggest starting with the Screenwriting Lounge (www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting).

HI Paul! Congratulations on writing 7 scripts. That's incredible! What do you tend to write?

Paul Sokal

Thanks Gigi. My first story was based on a true story I discovered in some of my father's old letters, centered on the Spanish Civil War and the persecution, when they returned home, of Americans who volunteered to defend democracy in Spain. My second feature was a near-future sci-fi story about climate change and population crises. The third was a drama based on a book I had started 30 years ago, the fourth a climate change thriller, the fifth a hockey romcom, then a short, which is a satire of the Catholic Church and lastly a drama set in the Cuban Missile Crisis. So, in short, my tendency I think is toward insanity. Honestly, I tend to dramas, writing and watching. Just starting research for a new one today. I've done pretty well in competitions. Now I just need to sell one. Any advice you have would be very appreciated.

Amazing ! I am a natural story teller and also tought - why not! Welcome

Paul Sokal

Thanks, Adriana.

Stephanie Munch

Welcome Paul ! Congrats on finishing your seventh script, what are you working on ?

Paul Sokal

Thanks, Stephanie. I just started research for a new script sort of 12 Angry Men meets Schindler's List. Unfortunately I've been writing in reverse order. My first script is a LARGE budget film, but based on a true and urgent story. That's what got me started in my screenwriting career. The script I'm doing research for now is where I should started, a contained low budget project, so I could get my first project under my belt.

You're right, we write things when we need to write them - and then it's always time to adjust our career plan (I may be arguing my own case here :D) keep us posted!

Wait, for real!? This is an inspirational story if I ever heard one. First of all, happy birthday if I don’t get to you on the day later. I’m out here in the SF Bay Area in California, but we run a lot of virtual meetings because of folks traveling around so often. I’d love to invite you into this little startup community we’re building.

Paul Sokal

Thanks and thanks, Torian

One piece of advice is to post your loglines, synopses, and scripts in the Logline Section of your profile, Paul Sokal. Producers, directors, etc. search Stage 32 for projects. Posting your projects is a way to get eyes on them. I sold four short scripts in 2020 through Stage 32. The producer looked through the projects on my profile and picked four.

Hi Paul! 7 scripts is no joke! Sending you an invite!
