I've never pitched before so please forgive my ignorance, but...
Is it better to have a finished script before pitching to an executive or is the idea to pitch, then write if it's accepted?
I've been hesitant to pitch without a finished product in place. What are the best practices when it comes to pitching?

Not dumb at all, Rachel Troche. Yeah, it's better to have a finished script before pitching to an executive in case they want to read the script.

What Maurice and Dan said. Have it ready to go. If they ask for it, and you're not ready you'll look bad and blew an opportunity.

You want to have the screenplay ready to send should they request it. If the screenplay is not finished, they may easily forget your pitch (their request for the script) by the time you send it. You want them to see it while they're excited about the concept.

if you've written a good script, and that is known by those you're pitching to, it's fair game to go off the cuff with pitches of ideas you haven't finished writing, because there's a level of trust established. most of the time it's best to have a completed script before pitching a project so that if you're asked if they can read it, you can provide the script to them.
