Hi everyone,
I just received the best feedback I have had for a pitch for a TV Sci-fi pilot from a top producer but I still got a pass.
The scorecard was all 4's and one a 5 (strength of voice).
This is the feedback:
Pitch Feedback:
This was a fantastic pitch. The Format, Logline, and Comps were very clear about what this show is about. It's a simple concept yet very strong and incredibly fascinating, especially since it feels that we aren't too far off from this! And the "Why this story now" part was very impactful. The characters in the story are very well-developed and have clear motives. The world is fascinating, and I really enjoyed the idea of Abi taking over Liv. It makes you realize what's possible, and it especially helps to set up the fun twist that the PM is being controlled. Overall, the story pitch is very engaging, and the various storylines are interconnected in a great way. Really great work on this.
I wanted to put this out there as I realise others may get similar feedback and a pass.
I'm looking at this as I have a great idea but it just wasn't the right time for this producer. I just wish they would put why it's a pass in the feedback. It would help us screenwriters so much.
Anyway, onwards and upwards, and onto the major script rewrite.

Congratulations on the 4's and 5, Marc Nelson! "I'm looking at this as I have a great idea but it just wasn't the right time for this producer." That's the right mindset! You're right. Knowing why producers, directors, etc. pass would help us a lot. I've only been told why a handful of times over the years when I pitched. That's the way of the business, but maybe that'll change one day. Congratulations again and hope you find the right producer for your series soon!

Congratulations on the incredible feedback! That's amazing! There are so many reasons why someone might pass despite loving an idea (which it's clear that you know that from your epic mindset). I had a similar experience and it was as simple as the producer worked with a smaller budget than was required for my concept. Another one had a similar project teed-up for an existing client. The possibilities are endless, and you truly do have the right mindset to get it picked up. I'm rooting for you!

thanks for sharing and looking at the situation from this angle! A similar situation happened to me the other week and I found myself being super bummed - but reading your perspective gave me pause to look at it from another angle - so thank you!

The reason they pass is simple. Producers and execs really want to do as less work as possible. Very rarely do They want to develop projects or attach talent. And a lot of that weight unfortunately falls on the creator. So if you’re an exec or a producer. Which project would you go for. A script that has a great idea and very well written script by an unknown writer, that has no talent or director attached….. or a fully packaged script with a well known writer, director, and talent that’s ready to shoot that has a previous proven track record of success?
