115 Ways To Say Walk

"These boots are made for walkin'

And that's just what they'll do

One of these days these boots are gonna step all over you."

Here's a big list of ways to say "walk" in your scripts. I like to change it up so I'm not writing "walk" over and over in a script. And sometimes you need something stronger than "walk."

The online thesaurus https://www.wordhippo.com/ also helps with alternates for actions. It's far better than thesaurus.com

It accepts phrases like "looks all over for," has antonyms, rhymes, subsets of a word and other useful language assistance.

Hippo has around 400 variations of 'walk' to fit any situation or mood.

Michael David

Love these resources! Thanks Maurice Vaughan and E Langley

Sam Sokolow

This is an aweosmem list, Maurice Vaughan - I love "moseys', "struts" and "zips".

Maurice Vaughan

That's pretty cool, E Langley! It'll come in handy. Thanks!

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Michael David.

I recently used "zips" in a script to show a character was running fast. Sam Sokolow. "Run" is another word that writers can overuse. I like to use "sprints," "races," "bolts," etc. instead of run sometimes.

Robert Franklin Godwin III

I found a useful list on body language descriptors. Great site!

Maurice Vaughan

That sounds helpful, Robert Franklin Godwin III. Can you share the link?

Robert Franklin Godwin III

As for using the descriptors for body language, I have received notes that suggested I was telling too much to the Director/actor how it should be played. I guess moderation is in order.

Marina Albert

Thanks for sharing Maurice Vaughan and E Langley :)

Ewan Dunbar

Great post Maurice Vaughan ! Its good to see when even basic actions can be enhanced to tell us something about character. Theres a great quote from Spielberg: "Characters should never enter. They should storm in, they should skulk in, they should tremble in. Create visual pictures‪."

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Ewan Dunbar. I've heard that quote. I think about it a lot when I write/rewrite scripts. I like to go through a script during rewrites, replacing words in action lines with more visual words. It's usually at the end of my rewriting process. I recommend it for anyone who writes scripts.

Jim Boston
