"[O]nce screenwriters realize AI can’t come up with original ideas, nor write scenes, they might be more open to using it."

I still need to check out the podcast, but I find the article below quite interesting and expressing some of my intuitions. Yesterday I was chatting with a friend who is a DP/director/writer and the topic of AI came up. (He's writing a feature about AI and what it means to be human.) Our thoughts veered much in the direction of this article, essentially seeing AI as a potential but limited tool that can help but never replace genuine human creativity.

What are your thoughts about this AI experiment by Scott Burns?

Yeah I agree with this I think. I think generally the people who are scared of AI being able to take their jobs, and this goes for everyone not just creatives, just haven't used it enough. Because in my opinion if they had a go of using it properly they would soon realise that there's absolutely no chance of that happening. I think we are much further away from anything like that than people realise, if it's even ever achievable. But it can definitely be a tool. I use it almost daily in my day job and 98% of the time it's terrible but 2% of the time it helps me to order my thoughts or spark an idea of how to start a project that is really valuable to me, as a person who has ADHD and often struggles with getting started or with overwhelm.

I've actually developed a GPT that's built off my own structure system, and it refuses to write for you. You can find it here

I made it for other people but have found myself using it a lot for brainstorming and developing ideas.

AI lacks originality. As being said you can go faster in the process, but the outcome is not as special and beatifull as what comes out of your own brain. Looking at some films, or better most films, that doesn't need to be a problem for the industry as it is delivering mediocre movies on a large scale already. So my idea is that AI will take over the work of many writers and filmmakers. And audiences will be fooled marketing wise in watching these AI driven productions by the studios. Untill something new comes up.

authors cannot use AI, because all ideas, drafts, and even finished works become part of the neural network. the author will lose ownership of his texts, and will not receive copyrights to the text generated by the neural network. so AI is only suitable for entertainment and is not suitable for creative work with the aim of selling.

agree with you Scott!! I was so apprehensive to use ChatGPT but I started playing with it to help me with editing stuff I’d already written or just to help tighten things up for my series bible - it was sooo unfriendly helpful and I have continued to use it as a supplemental tool (almost like a virtual editor :)

Sarah Jones

meant to say “incredibly helpful” :)

I do my writing with A.I. only in the sense that it helps me to organize my work. As for my songwriting, I have used A.I. to generate three and four words prompts of possible song titles. I do not ask for which direction the song should sound. I simply take the prompts and five minutes later I have written a song.

I haven't used Ai, but for me to come up with another movie concept by looking at other movies, sounds the opposite of what I would do. So I would need to feed a lot of key moments of my life, my personality type, my family dynamics, maybe my hobbies, and thoughts multiple trends, into the Ai system -- and then Ai might have a chance of developing a script concept I would be interested in pursuing. I think what I'm saying is it's the personal interpretation of our lives that make movies interesting.
