Screenwriting : They say kill your darlings... by Pat Alexander

Pat Alexander

They say kill your darlings...

...just don't kill James Bond. The new James Bond writers (Steven Knight - PEAKY BLINDERS) reveal 'Huge Headache' when it comes to resurrecting the super-spy for Amazon.

This quote tickled me--

A source close to the production claimed: "Writers are tearing their hair out. Bond didn't just vanish off a cliff or fake his death – he was blown to pieces on screen. Everyone agrees it was a massive mistake because Bond is supposed to be eternal. They are now stuck trying to find a believable way to resurrect him, and it is proving almost impossible."

What do you think? How would you go about resurrecting the fictional legend?

I would go as long as possible, Pat Alexander.

I don't like killing my darlings. I try to save them for other scripts.

And I'm rewriting a Horror Action feature script for Stage 32’s November Write Club. I was gonna have the protagonist kill the villain, but I set it up so the villain will be a more powerful villain in the sequel.

I think I'd take the tactic that being Bond is a role given to the man. He isn't James Bond. He becomes James Bond through selection. The Appointed Bond.

Make the full deal part of the codename. Show a bit of the selection of the new Bond. Boom.

It's long been a franchise role. So Bond being "eternal" just becomes a passing of the torch. Daniel Craig's run as Bond is so self-contained anyway. There is nothing stopping them from simply saying, "A new Bond has been appointed" and then everybody go on about business.

Maybe that's oversimplified. I'm not sure. But that's what I would do.

Pat Alexander I’d look at a younger version of Bond just starting out as an agent rather than trying to resurrect him. A take on his early missions could explore how he became the legend we know, while opening up fresh storytelling possibilities of coming of age without undoing what’s already been done.

Antony Voronov

Elle Bolan I like the solution!

Pat Alexander

Elle Bolan That seems like the solution they were setting up with Lashana Lynch's character Nomi (the new 00) in the last film, but alas... seems like writers under pressure getting in their own way. Think that's the way it works most seamlessly.

Pat Alexander

Dwayne Williams 2 I like a younger version of Bond as well. Could get into more of his previous missions and make big conflicts out of past mistakes he's made and lessons he's learned from them

Elle Bolan

@Antony Voronov thanks! Occam's razor at work.

Elle Bolan

@Pat Alexander - we writers do that sometimes. Tool wrote a whole song about overthinking and overanalyzing. Haha. When a creative brain gets in its own way.

There's a blog post in that.

Abram Christian

Pat Alexander I believe there could be two ways to go about it amongst others.

1. He could have used a sophisticated, hi-tech robot likenessPat Alexander to do the stunt while he uses other unseen bond like gadgets to keep him in tact such as hanging on a cliff.

2. Maybe he had a specialized suit strong enough to withstand an explosion with hi tech face and skin protection as well as being equipped with an explosive resistant gas mask that activates in milliseconds.

Alex Hunter

I'd ignore it. Bond got married in OHMSS, they... ignored it.

Randall Scott White

Maybe end the damn series or start with 008

Dustin Richardson

Seriously? I thought it was a great choice to kill Bond off. That whole ending, leading up to him realizing he was a father, was emotional and added more depth and reality to the franchise, as they always did with Craig. It was gutsy, but I appreciated it. It's not like every actor playing Bond is supposed to be the same Bond. It's the Bond-Verse. Now that Amazon owns it, I'm concerned about what they do, no matter what. Restarting the IP with a stupid game show???

Scott Weisenfeld

I seem to remember that someone had suggested that James Bond was a concept and the selected 007 would then have the active name of James Bond. I can see where James Bond was the focal point and that the right agent could become James Bond. Since he was an agent his real identity wouldn't have been public knowledge. I am not sure how I feel about it as it is like the transition of each Dr. Who and that the next person assumes the mantle.

Dwayne Williams 2

Pat Alexander What do you think about a younger Bond done in a stylized, almost Tomb Raider-style anime approach?

Cynna Ael

It's a title-- 007. James Bond-- doesn't have to be his real name. Again- think of people who we give titular names to and they never go by their birthnames. It's the easiest explanation to do. Why? It would explain EVERY James Bond change in movie history. It's honestly that simple that they're overthinking it.

Linda Bradshaw-Rogers

Dwayne Williams 2 What a fresh idea. Why not It was done with Star Trek!

Stephen Potts

Of the many options available, one is the Dr Who approach. A regenerated Bond ( doesn't matter how) with the same name and abilities, played by different actors with different personalities. Another is to make it clear that Bond is a role which can be passed on. Maybe the next film starts with M and MI6 being explicit they have lost Bond and now need another one. A candidate Bond (under another name) goes through hell to save the world ( again) and is rewarded at the end when M tells him his name is now " Bond.James Bond" There could even be a flashback to the moment when Daniel Craig acquired the name for himself

Ingrid Wren

Why does Bond have to be male? What if he has a sister who steps into the role? Julia Bond... on his majesty's service. Why not flip the narrative?

Helen Bland

I'd give him a long lost son, also James. I would never annihilate such a famous character, my principal protagonists live on.

Arthur Charpentier

Hi! I would just ignore the plot of the last movie. New Bond - new missions!

Nikita Simpson

I'm not sure, but it's not unusual for them to ignore previous sequels. Or they can do a movie like David Niven in Casino Royale (1967) - a standalone of sorts. Orrrrrr they can just pass on the codename to a new man/woman. I personally think it's run its course to be honest. Hot take hahaha
