RADIO\WAVES
By Jeff Goldberg

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

RADIO\WAVES is the next teen beach comedy; two misfits think taking summer jobs at the local radio station will make them more popular when the rich, obnoxious summer crowd overrun their small beach town.

RADIO\WAVES is SUPERBAD meets PRIVATE PARTS. It’s about buddies, the beach, the bullies, and the babes when, back in the 70’s, being a radio D.J. was really cool.

SYNOPSIS:

Flashback to the early 1970’s, when radio was the first place to turn to hear the latest music, and being a disc jockey was really cool. About 100 miles from Chicago, the small town of North Shore sits at the edge of Lake Michigan. Every summer, the town is overrun by obnoxious big city college kids who come for the beach, but act like the entire town belongs to them, flaunting their money, their cars, boats and condos. It’s hard to complete with the “FIPs”—or Frickin Illinois People—as the locals call them, but Kevin and Marcus, both around 20, have a plan to not only compete, but make this the best summer ever. So, instead of posting a flyer about the local radio station looking for summer disc jockeys, Marcus stuffs it in his pocket and talks his buddy Kevin into applying because, let’s face it: chicks love D.J.s. Marcus is already experienced in radio because he works at the local community college’s radio station. He’s positive that he and Kevin can become more popular by being real D.J.s. Kevin’s doubtful—and scared—because when he took radio class, he’d throw up at the site of a microphone. But, on a false recommendation, they get the jobs. Unfortunately, the radio station Kevin and Marcus are relying help them be cool has never been cool in any way. WNSR plays everything from music to put you to sleep to polkas. Fortunately, it’s the only station that comes in loud and clear on the beach. Kevin and Marcus go from misfits to misbehaving during their rise as local radio stars. Kevin’s early on-the-air nerves disappear as he and Marcus hone their radio skills playing some of the 1970’s biggest hits. All the while, Kevin’s keeping his radio alter ego a secret, especially from Samantha, the girl he’s wanted since school began. On the air he’s cool and cocky. In person, he’s still awkward and shy. As fireworks light up the sky on the 4th of July, Kevin gets closer to getting his girl but Marcus has other plans. He hooks them up with two hot Chicago girls who they take back to the radio station to party with the D.J.s, an event that gets mistakenly broadcast during a late night transmitter test. Thinking he can keep his character’s escapades a secret until he leaves for college after Labor Day, success goes to Kevin’s head. He goes a little too far, upsetting even his best friend Marcus who was the one who encouraged him in the first place. But worlds collide when Kevin and Marcus are scheduled to make a live appearance at a station sponsored “Battle of the Bands on the Beach.” Kevin has to finally reveal his real identity to the fans, the FIPs, and to Samantha, who’s crushed by the truth. As Kevin realizes what an arrogant person he’s become, a band from North Shore beats the FIP’s Chicago entry in the Battle of the Bands, earning the locals some respect for the first time.
