ODE TO INSOMNIA
By Phineas Larson

GENRE: Other
LOGLINE:

Various standalone stories of young love, brutal action, childhood playfulness, and serial killers are told through the memories of an old, lonely writer who can’t fall asleep on Christmas Eve.

SYNOPSIS:

The story opens with a family driving through the rural northeast, stopping to take in the mesmerizing stars. In a lonely, suburban house lives an old writer. He lays in bed, unable to sleep. The Insomniac then anders around the empty, depressing house reminiscing about his past through the various stories we wrote at different points in his life. When lost in the nostalgia of his late wife, we explore a Christmas Eve with two teenagers: Dan and Nina. Dan is Jewish and getting over an intense breakup. Nina has nobody else to spend Christmas Eve with, and harbors deep, bittersweet resentment for Dan due to his relationship. As they eat at a diner, drive home, and sit in her room, truths are revealed and what starts as a black and white, somber exploration of two adolescents who can’t connect ends in the vibrant colors of two optimistic lovers. Upon entering his old study, The Insomniac picks up from books from his prime, where he was a witty young writer with a dark sense of humor. This takes us into the story of a small, young, rich family. A young wife, a young husband, and a nine-year-old girl are ready to sleep before a happy Christmas morning until their house is broken into by four stupid, petty, reckless criminals. As whimsical Christmas music persists, the mother and little girl defend their home and each other with burning trees and shotguns. The next story is the closest to a memory, as two young boys in a large suburban family plan a heist of their Christmas presents as their family sleeps. They sneak throughout the house in their own imaginative supe, an eerie psychopathic monologue, action, and classic twists. As the sun rises, The Insomniac is greeted by the family from the beginning: his family.
