BLAKE & RESCUE
By Kevin Dobbs

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

62-year-old Blake Washington, African American Vietnam War Veteran, wins a chance to become a part-time AAA baseball player and mascot. He soon becomes a national sensation and decides to use his influence to try to get his friend, Rescue (a terminally ill white man), the Medal of Honor for saving his life and six others.

SYNOPSIS:

It’s 2015, and Blake, African American, and Rescue, a white man, are inseparable, having played AAA baseball together and then served in Vietnam, where they were wounded together and where Rescue saved Blake’s life along with six other soldiers. Blake came out of Vietnam with a functional body, but not enough, at the time, to re-enter baseball. And Rescue, as a result of his wounds, is an amputee and has suffered many cancers from heavy Agent Orange exposure.

Still baseball buffs, the two are regular fans at the Sacrament River Rocks Baseball Park, where they enjoy AAA baseball. One day, at a 7th inning raffle, Blake wins an at-bat with the River Rock's best pitcher. Because Blake has stayed in great shape, kept visiting a batting cage, and because he was an up-and-coming star during his playing days, it turns out, even at age 62, he can still hit.

During his time at bat, Blake wows the fans and River Rock’s management. Because the team is struggling from lack of attendance, management feels Blake’s “mascot” appeal as a part-time player could bring in more fans. Blake turns out to be one of the team’s best hitters and becomes a national sensation. As it turns out, Blake also ends up brilliantly coaching many of the young players, sending some of them to the Major Leagues.

Even with his national recognition, he feels there’s something missing. Rescue, who is dying because of his 7th cancer, should have a Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery in Vietnam but hasn’t yet been seriously considered because none of the men he saved were white. Blake sees his new fame as a vehicle to get Rescue that honor.
