Thirteen years after the invasion, a drug addicted, teen soldier’s sense of reality becomes questionable when she’s taken under the wing of a grizzly, old mentor that no one else can see, however, after a gruesome attack on her troop, she must lead a pack of young survivors through the monster infested forest to the promise of a sanctuary… that may or may not exist.
SYNOPSIS:
‘Lord of the Flies’ goes down the rabbit hole.
MAE, a self-medicating, fifteen-year-old, desperately wants to numb her traumatic grief while seeking temporary escape from the fucked-up, MONSTER infested world she and the other surviving children inherited.
When she is called up to join THE GUARD, a militia type army that protects the perimeter (but goes through soldiers faster than most change their underwear) Mae doesn’t pretend it’s anything other than a death sentence. Soldiers don’t survive long here - period.
Ridiculed by the other soldiers, Mae is handed the worst duties until she crosses paths with HANK, a grizzly, old soldier who decides to take her under his wing. The cracks in the amor she’s built around herself begin to show as she slowly lets him in. But then, without warning, Hank vanishes! Mae doubles down on her grief and desire to turn the pain off.
However, when she discovers no one else has ever seen Hank, she wonders if she hallucinated the whole thing?
Is it the drugs or has she finally gone mad? But then again, if he wasn’t real, how could she have known how to survive the attack? And could she do it again? She’ll have to travel further down the rabbit hole to find the answers — if she hopes to survive.
