SYNOPSIS:
Dan Webber is a recently divorced accountant living is a small town and raising his eighteen year old daughter Jennifer in their house. Jennifer's friend Whitney Long is a frequent guest to the house. Whitney has been unusually sullen and confides to Dan that she has recently broken up with her long-time boyfriend. Dan gives Whitney advice on heartache as he is going through it himself. Whitney is suprised at the ease and comfort she has talking with Dan and later calls him. They talk on the phone for a while as if they were old friends, and both confess their surprise at the ease of conversation. They eventually get to laughing and talking on all subjects, including food. Whitney mentions that there is a restaurant in town that looks great and that she always wanted to go to. At his office, Dan confides in his colleague Rick about Whitney. Dan says that while Whitney is obviously an attractive young woman, he feels that he has finally found someone to talk to and that Whitney feels the same way. Rick admits that he finds the whole thing icky and that it can only lead to harm and heartbreak. Whitney and Dan start to admit the strange bond to each other but decide that as long as it stays platonic, there is nothing wrong with it. Dan takes Whitney to the restaurant, and they are both nervous that they are on a "date", even though they have set the boundaries before hand. Jennifer gets wind of the date, as does Dan's ex-wife and Whitney's parents. Everyone in Dan and Whitney's circle jumps on the bandwagon to break up the relationship. But while Dan and Whitney understand their concerns, they find that the healing that the relationship is bringing to them is too important to destroy. Whitney's friends and most of the high-school community start to tease and shun her for "dating" her best friend's father and Dan's adult friends and colleagues do the same. Dan and Whitney decide that, although the relationship has always stayed platonic, they need to reevaluate what is ultimately important to them and the world around them. They decide to "break up" and deal with more heartbreak and eventually move on. Whitney meets a new boy in high school and Dan is introduced to a single mother at work. Jennifer and Whitney repair their relationship, and while Whitney is over at the house, Dan offers her a passing hello.
