When Lou learns who made the offer, a man named Joe Bonanno Sr., he goes straight to the FBI. All while, Lou's naive yet curious thirteen year old daughter, Lori, is told by her best friends, the Second Coming is at hand. Not growing up with religion, Lori's friends educate her in this belief. In doing so her sense of reality is utterly disrupted and she suffers a brain zap. She begins to doubt everything and suffers constant torment from a vindictive God. Worst of all, God's unpredictable return could separate Lori from her dad, her best friend, and mentor. To protect herself from having another brain zap, and others from this terrifying news, Lori tells no-one. When Lou meets with Bob by-the-book Anderson, he convinces Lou to wear a wire and infiltrate the Mafia. Transforming Lou from small town car dealer to the first untrained civilian Mafia Informant in U.S. history. As Lou takes bigger and bigger risks, he begins to worry that his double life will catch up to him…and his family. As Lou disappears into his mission, Lori tumbles into ever-growing Dissociative Episodes and begins obsessively attempting to track the whereabouts of her suddenly elusive dad using the wall calendar. To keep her terror at bay, Lori convinces herself, as long as her dad has a project or an event listed, "God won't kill everyone because her dad is very important and God wouldn't dare ruin his plans." As the the situation grows more and more complex, Lou must evade suspicion and Lori must learn to find strength from within as she navigates her tumultuous teenage years in small town California. In the end Lou was successful though the celebration was short-lived. Less than a year after Bonanno’s conviction in 1980, Lou died of a brain tumor at age forty-nine with Lori by his side.
