As tensions flare between the US and Russia, the International Space Station commander struggles to unite his crew from both nations against forces hell-bent on transforming the ISS into a weapon of war.
SYNOPSIS:
After the Russians shut down an American reconnaissance jet over the Black Sea, tensions
escalate among the Americans, led by ISS commander CYRUS SHARP, and
their Russian crewmates over whether they should protest a motion in
Congress to include the ISS in the sanctions.
NASA instructs Cyrus and his teammate, STEVEN FAIRBANKS, to keep the
situation quiet while they lobby Congress to exclude the ISS from the
sanctions. Meanwhile, the Station faces a severe power outage requiring
urgent repairs outside.
To unite his crew and assert that the ISS should remain apolitical and
excluded from the sanctions, Cyrus insists that he and his Russian
colleague, NIKOLAI, will undertake a spacewalk together to repair the
grid, which will be streamed live. NASA reluctantly agrees.
As they venture outside, Nikolai loses his grip on the station and
drifts into space. Cyrus barely manages to rescue him, becoming an
international hero. As the media and the US public celebrate Cyrus's
bravery and support the ISS, Congress feels pressured to remove the
program from the sanctions.
However, Cyrus's euphoria is short-lived when NASA discovers that the
ISS grid was compromised by Russian malware. Cyrus is instructed to keep
this a secret and receives a new emergency protocol for activation in
the event of another malware attack that could trigger a catastrophic
power failure and cause the ISS to plummet from the sky.
SPECIAL AGENT SHIELDS of the NSA initiates an investigation into the
possible involvement of the Russian crew in the hack. He suggests that
Nikolai lost his grip on the ISS intentionally as a PR stunt to sway
public opinion. Cyrus defends his colleague but cannot dismiss the
possibility that Nikolai might have exploited the situation.
Things appear to return to normal. When the crew gathers for a New
Year's Eve party, the ISS suffers a massive blackout. All communications
fail, and the ISS begins to descend toward Earth.
Cyrus has no choice but to order the evacuation of the Station. Just
before the point of no return, he activates the new, untested emergency
protocol, the effectiveness of which remains uncertain.
After the crew abandons the Station, just in time, the secret protocol
enables the ISS to boost itself back into its proper orbit, albeit at
the cost of severing its connection to the Mission Center's control and
communication.
Weeks after returning home, Cyrus grows concerned that no new missions
to the ISS have been announced. Upon learning that Russia has begun
deploying a new space station, he suspects something is amiss. Cyrus
appears on national TV and demands an independent investigation into
what has happened to the ISS. He also makes a dramatic statement - "the
ISS was hijacked!"
It turns out Cyrus was correct. As we return to the ISS, we discover a
new crew has taken over, repurposing the ISS into a military and
intelligence-gathering outpost in space.
