LAND OF THE DEAD
By Mariam Shahriar

GENRE: Drama, Thriller / Suspense
LOGLINE:

When Magdalena kills her abusive army colonel husband to save her daughter, an American woman flees through cartel territory and hostile desert terrain, carrying explosive evidence of government corruption, and must survive the gang-controlled Mexican frontier and the U.S. border to protect her child and expose the truth.

SYNOPSIS:

Maggie Reutemann’s privileged life in Mexico City’s suburbs shatters when she discovers her husband, Colonel Herman Reutemann, a powerful Mexican Army officer, is secretly having an affair with her closest friend. Determined to reclaim her independence, Maggie moves out and struggles to rebuild her career as a once-renowned architect. But Herman blocks her at every turn, even banning her from seeing their adopted daughter, Lucia, as a bitter custody battle begins.

Only Rocio, the family’s devout housekeeper, dares to help. She secretly allows Maggie to visit Lucia while hiding a darker truth: Herman has been abusing the child. Rocio records him in the act, and unable to let the girl continue suffering, she kills him with his own gun. When Maggie arrives, Rocio shows her the video and confesses. Together, they bury Herman’s body in the garden. Maggie takes his computer and flees with Lucia. When Herman’s adult children arrive for his birthday and he never appears, suspicion grows. The military blames Los Zapos, a cartel with a vendetta against Herman, while his children accuse Maggie to cut her out of the inheritance. When the family dog uncovers the corpse and an autopsy confirms the truth, a nationwide manhunt begins, led by Herman’s own military unit, with Maggie as the prime suspect.

Desperate, Maggie strikes a dangerous deal with Los Zapos through Rocio’s son, Julio, now a gang member. In exchange for help reaching the U.S. border, she offers explosive evidence: proof of a high-level pedophile network that could blackmail the government into freeing their imprisoned boss. To gain their trust, she claims she killed Herman herself, unaware Herman secretly protected the cartel’s operations from within the Army. Infuriated, the cartel orders her execution, until Rocio intervenes, confessing to the killing and begging her son to spare Maggie. The cartel boss in prison recognizes the leverage and authorizes a deal: protect Maggie and secure his escape.

Dragged through a violent clash at the border as soldiers and cartel fighters collide, Maggie and Lucia are pushed to the edge of survival. Meanwhile, consumed with guilt upon discovering Herman named her as his sole heir, Rocio takes her own life after leaving her church. Crushed by despair, Julio walks away from the cartel to save what remains of his soul.

Exhausted and nearly broken, Magdalena and Lucia finally step onto American soil, only to confront ICE agents with guns drawn. The future of mother and daughter hangs on one final question: will the United States see them as desperate survivors… or dangerous fugitives sent back to die?
