After a short time Alden proposes to Nora and thus begins the unraveling of Alden's ordinary life as he tries to win her heart, despite Nora's infidelities, and opposing nature. After Nora leaves Alden one winter's day, with a short note left in their kitchen, Alden, bereft of her love, retires from his postal job, and takes up filmmaking when he buys an old movie camera at an estate sale. While filming one day he sees Nora and follows her to her apartment house. He takes a room across the street from her apartment and begins filming her through his apartment window. Nora, now in the possession of Alden's pistol, conceives a plan to kill her lover's wife, but her plan goes awry and she murders both her lover and his wife at their home. She then arranges for Alden to come rescue her and when he arrives at the house she drugs him and frames him for murder. Alden, pursued by the police, seeks to prove his innocence. but the only hope he has is on the film he shot of Nora from his apartment window, which shows her holding his pistol. He takes refuge at the home of an aunt of one of the two young women he meets at the apartment house where he lives. Nora plans her getaway, delayed only by her desire to collect the reward money for Alden's capture. She hires two men from a strip club where she used to work, to kidnap the two young women in an effort to obtain the film from Alden. A detective follows the two men Nora has hired to kidnap the young women and rescues them. Alden is confronted by Nora, who forces him at gunpoint to drive her to wherever he's hidden the film. He escapes, but is wounded and is subsequently captured by the police. He tells the police his story but they don't believe him, and Nora collects the reward money. But before she can fly to South America and freedom, the two young women find the film roll and clear Alden of the murders. Nora, pursued by the police, and realizing she is now a suspect, plans to kill the young women, and Alden, and make it look like a murder suicide. She drugs the three of them but Alden flees to the roof of his apartment house. Alden and Nora struggle on the roof and two detectives intercede. Nora kills one detective, but the other, though wounded, shoots Nora and she plunges to her death off the roof.
