SYNOPSIS:
Narrated by the title character, a Chinese woman named Lin-Lin marries a widowed doctor, Xing, through an agreement by their parents. Less than a year of marriage she has an affair with a hospital lawyer, Biao, due to neglect and resentment from Xing. Lin-Lin becomes pregnant and gets shunned away from both men due to not ever loving her and bearing a fourth child into their family. Lin-Lin raises her child on her own alone and tries to guide her daughter in life. When her daughter secretly dating a boy from school Lin-Lin tries give her daughter explanations not to date boys or men but fails. They have an argument which leads to the daughter wanting to know about her father. After the upsetting argument, Lin-Lin takes her life and leaves a message to her daughter about her failed marriage, her affair, and giving birth to a fourth child. The losing her mother and knowing she was branded as an ancient superstition, the daughter vows to hunt down the two men who have wronged her mother and punish them as the ancient dark symbol they labelled her as.
