When volunteering to make a delivery to the warfront puts a self-loathing cowboy back on the radar of a dogmatic warmonger with a centuries-old vendetta, he’s saddled with a naive prince and a found family of outcasts who are about to make trouble for the crown.
SYNOPSIS:
Lain is a three-century-old immortal dark wizard, on the wrong side of the law of the Dominion, the imperial land the show opens on. When we meet him, he hates himself and the way the world is. But he still finds purpose in trying to help people on a small scale. He’s running deliveries for the local baker and de facto matron of a small village.
They discover her son, who went off to war, ordered dumplings from his mom before he left. Heartbroken she missed this send-off for her child, Lain offers to make the delivery clear across the country to him.
After a dust-up with the local guard, Lain springs Hugo, an insectoid young man from a nation the Dominion is at war with. The odd pair set off on their adventure; now chased by Huntresses, master assassins for the national government.
Along the way, Lain also picks up Rei the Thief, Ellis the Savage, and Fear the Dragon, each in their own states of outcast.
Season 1 explores the hurt they’ve caused, the hurt they’ve suffered, and how it stacks up in a world at war.
The end of the season finds them arriving at the war front and looking upon the devastation; the hunt for the baker’s son growing desperate.
