Three laboratory flies -- Professor Wally von Plague, his assistant Gnatthew Perry and Gnat's sexy but dumb object of lust -- are hurtled uncontrollably through time, making the present safer for all fly kind. Trapped in history, they're forced to wing it.
SYNOPSIS:
Wally summons Gnat to his lab. Gnat coerces Ruth to join him, telling her that they are filming a reality show about mold spores that run a goat fighting ring. Wally is less than pleased that Ruth is with Gnat, but can't deny her attractiveness, even when she's vomiting on, then eating a low fat wafer.
Wally explains his scientific breakthrough: a time travel device. A small black box with a couple of buttons, dials and flickering lights. Two metal handles attach and anyone the size of a fly will be transported through space-time. His intention is travel to Topeka, KS in 1905 and thwart the invention of the fly swatter, then return to the present and collect the Nobel Fleas Prize.
Gnat refuses to help unless he can bring Ruth. Wally relents and jams a makeshift aluminum foil handle into the device. A few dial twists, a push of a button and WHOOSH! They're gone...
They reappear in a cornfield in Topeka, Kansas, asking a local millipede to confirm the date. It worked! It's July 23, 1905. Now to spread the word to the local flies. They confront a fly Chieftain with his swarm, dining on a dead skunk. The Chieftain plans to take his swarm into the barn where he smells a rotting hedgehog, their next meal.
Unfortunately, the man who invents the fly swatter is working in the barn. So Gnat proposes to drag the hedgehog out of the barn so the fly swarm stays out of his way and never has the impetus to invent the fly swatter.
Unfortunately, Ruth has the not-so-bright idea of asking the man to help them. Her interference is enough to cause the man to staple some wire mesh to a stick so he can swat at her. He invents the fly swatter. The trio is in awe. But frightened and flying for their lives. They avoid the man's swats and race back to the time travel device.
WHOOSH! Off they go... But not before the man nicks the device. The gauges spin out of control. Lights flicker. Sparks of blue electricity rush through Ruth's makeshift handles and into her body. Flashes of famous moments in history pass in and out of her head. What's happening?!?
They come to a stop, landing in what looks to be a jungle. The time device is on fire. Gnat and Wally put it out. Ruth is in a trance. She seems to know where they are, muttering something about the Mesozoic Era. She snaps out of it. "Home sweet home!" she exclaims. "It sure is, Ruth... It sure is," consoles Gnat. Not even close.
