SYNOPSIS:
Nigel Hastings is a boring, unremarkable tax auditor, quietly surviving the daily grind in London. He lives alone, drinks lukewarm tea, and has never done anything remotely interesting in his life. But that all changes when he’s summoned to a hidden back office no one at HMRC ever talks about. There, a group of shadowy figures inform him that the previous Grim Reaper has disappeared under mysterious circumstances—and he is the replacement.
Now, Nigel’s life is split into two worlds:
Armed with an iPhone that pings every time a soul is ready for collection (but still has a limited data plan) and a dramatic, oversized scroll in Reaper mode, Nigel must escort souls to their final destinations—up or down—by touching them.
Only the souls he’s meant to collect can see his true form (a 7-foot-tall, hooded Reaper), while to everyone else, he still looks like a miserable office drone. This leads to absurd public scenes where people scream and flee from him while bystanders see nothing wrong.
As Nigel struggles with the absurdities of his new job—including accidentally reaping the wrong people, dealing with rogue souls, and squabbling with afterlife HR about his pathetic £1.50 bonuses—he starts to suspect that the last Reaper didn’t disappear… he was taken. And if Nigel doesn’t uncover the truth fast, he might be next.
