A disgraced nine-tailed fox embarks on a perilous quest to rescue his sister from bandits, all while grappling with the elemental fire he inherited from a war-torn god and discovering the power within himself to restore balance to an island devastated by divine war.
SYNOPSIS:
In the aftermath of a devastating war between gods, Japan lies in ruin. The goddess Amaterasu narrates a land on the brink of despair, blaming the divine conflict between Izanagi and Kagutsuchi for the catastrophic state of the island. Amidst this chaos, thirteen kitsune are born, blessed by the gods, to serve as guardians of the land in their absence. Arakan, one of the chosen, struggles with the volatile fire power gifted to him by Amaterasu, a gift that simultaneously incites wrath within him and draws suspicion from others. Despite his prowess, Arakan finds himself at odds with his fellow kitsune and humans, leading to an exile after a violent outburst destroys a shrine in his homeland.
Lost and battling his inner demons, Arakan’s only solace is visiting his sister, Kawa, until one day, her presence is painfully absent. Amaterasu and Tenko summon him, revealing that bandits have kidnapped Kawa, holding her captive to exploit her water-generating abilities. Stripped of his fire power to prevent bloodshed, Arakan embarks on a quest to save his sister, joined reluctantly by a human ronin named Kenzo, who offers guidance in controlling his anger without the reliance on divine fire. Together, they navigate the hardships of survival, encountering both allies and adversaries, including the cunning bandit leader who aims to use Kawa for his own rebellion against the gods.
As Arakan’s journey progresses, he learns invaluable lessons from those around him, particularly Kenzo, who teaches him the true nature of strength and control. Alongside these lessons, Arakan experiences profound personal growth, which allows him to rediscover the fire within, now tempered by wisdom. His newfound peace drives him to assist a monk’s monastery under attack, demonstrating that he has learned to value the bonds between humans and kitsune. Ultimately, his journey of self-discovery and sacrifice leads him back to Kawa, where, armed with the power of more than just fire, Arakan must make the ultimate choice: allegiance to the gods or kinship with humanity.
