L.A. ANIMALS (FEATURE)

L.A. ANIMALS (FEATURE)
By Oliver Malzard

GENRE: Drama, Crime
LOGLINE:

A cautionary parable of dangerous idealism, unbiased fate and contradictory justice, set against the backdrop of a neon-bathed Los Angeles during the revolutionary 1990s.

SYNOPSIS:

Justin Mills, a jaded narcotics detective, is on an idealistic mission to rid the grungy streets of L.A. of the vermin that plague it. Under the alias of animal masks, his crew have become an urban legend as a sort of retributive spirit that terrifies L.A.'s criminal underbelly.

Get a glimpse into his life, and peek behind the mask as we explore his tumultuous home life, including his relationship with Jodie, a former partner of his, and countless others.

We also follow Officer Lawrence Boles, a relatively fresh cop with a more humanistic sense of justice. As he quickly learns the limitations of his own morality, he becomes enveloped in Justin's twisted ideologies, relentlessly pursuing him across the desolate city.

Told over 4 chapters, we follow Justin's descent from noble idealism to dangerous obsession, leading to his ultimate choice to fully embrace "The Animal".

WHY "L.A. ANIMALS"?

"L.A. Animals" offers a refreshing take on the stagnant crime genre and embraces the visual aesthetic of a grungy, neon-bathed world that we rarely see in cinema. The story of morality, justice and fate offers an intellectual, intense, and often nail-biting character study into a contradictory individual. Within this next generation of movie-goers and film enthusiasts alike, a new voice is invaluable in reaching this demographic of people.

A recent study from the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science found 4 key aspects that make a screenplay profitable: solid cast of characters, great amounts of dialogue, slow scene pace and emotionality. I can say with 100% certainty that L.A. Animals goes above and beyond in all 4 of these categories.

With a diverse cast of characters, the tension gets dialled to 11 as the script makes it abundantly clear that any of these characters can die at any moment. This makes every confrontation feel like it's dancing between life and death for the audience, engaging them in the story tenfold.

Below, I have attached the first 10 pages of the screenplay for your reading pleasure. If you're interested in reading the full script, please let me know!
