SYNOPSIS:

SYNOPSIS:

Isaac Gabriel, a theatre actor at a prestigious theatre company, dreams of greatness. These dreams are soon jeopardised when his dream role of Othello, the lead role in a Broadway production of the titular Shakespearean play, is taken from him by Oliver, a jaded yet successful actor, who Isaac believes is undeserving of the role. To add salt to the wound, the theatre director assigns Isaac as Oliver's understudy.

Isaac, in his quest for the lead role, executes a plot to usurp Oliver from the lead role and take it for himself. With the help of a fellow actor named Ryan, Isaac attempts several different methods to prove Oliver's inadequacies and unreliability as the lead actor. However, Oliver and several other actors soon catch on to Isaac's scheme, and as the walls close in on him, he must resort to more and more desperate methods to achieve this goal.

Two years later, we follow Oliver (now in an orange jumpsuit) as he sues Isaac for malfeasance during the Broadway production of Othello. Explore this intricate web of deceit, jealousy and betrayal as we learn more and more about how far one actor is willing to go to achieve his dreams.

WHY "THE UNDERSTUDY"

Modern Shakespeare adaptations have proved time and time again to reach audiences across generations, as demonstrated in commercial and critical successes such as "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999) and "The Tragedy of Macbeth" (2021). A modern, metafictive and more serious Othello adaptation such as "The Understudy" is bound to resonate with audiences with its strong thematic and dramatic questions, complex characters, non-linear structure and witty dialogue.

Additionally, an investment in this story and my abilities is an investment in the opportunity to reach a whole new generation of movie-goers. Studies have shown that Generation Z is the hardest demographic to reach in terms of films, and an investment in myself as a storyteller is invaluable, as being someone who is in Generation Z, I have a distinctive insight into how to reach this demographic with stories such as "The Understudy". Additionally, the transcendent nature of reinventing a classical tale into a modern context also brings in older generations to see a more down-to-earth story on screen.

Below I have attached concept art for what I imagine the film to look like and the screenplay itself (136 pages long). Thank you for taking the time to read my logline today, and I hope you'll join me in creating generation-defining stories.
