SYNOPSIS:

In a Puritan village steeped in fear and superstition, eight-year-old Martha Anne Glasgow is jailed for witchcraft after a poppet—a handmade doll—seems to inflict real harm on those around her. When a hanged dog, a mauled woman, and a lecherous tailor's sudden death all align with Martha’s presence, the town demands her execution.

Henry Cory, a grieving cobbler who lost his daughter and struggles for redemption, offers to be Martha’s guardian, challenging his wife, the sheriff, and the entire town’s growing hysteria. As Henry shelters the child, he uncovers dark secrets about the town’s treatment of Martha’s mother—burned as a witch—and begins to suspect the real evil may lie in those who claim to uphold justice.

As the trial nears and the noose tightens, Henry and Martha descend into a haunted well to recover the mother’s remains, hoping to put a restless spirit to peace.
