SYNOPSIS:

Seven-year-old Megan lives with selective mutism, an anxiety disorder that makes it difficult for her to speak in certain settings, even to her own grandad. At home, she’s playful and expressive with her mum, but in public or around others, words escape her. Her mum, Sarah, is trying to navigate the unknown, seeking support through therapy, but progress feels slow and uncertain.

Meanwhile, Megan begins spending more time with her grandad, a quiet man still adjusting to life after loss. At first, their relationship is tentative. He’s unsure how to reach her, and she remains locked in her silence. But over time, through small acts of kindness, shared routines, and gentle humour, a new kind of communication begins to form. A drawing. Time in the park. A Phone for messaging. Their bond grows, not with big breakthroughs, but with patient presence.

MUTE is a tender short film that explores the emotional world of childhood anxiety and the importance of connection without pressure. It’s not a story about “fixing” silence, but about understanding it, creating space for children like Megan to feel seen, heard, and safe. Through subtle storytelling and an all-female creative team, MUTE aims to shed light on a condition many still misunderstand and offer a compassionate look at how love and patience can speak volumes.
