A disillusioned Senator searching for meaning is given a chance to deliver Paul's letter to the Laodiceans. His clumsy journey is intercepted by an adventure seeking simpleton, a band of gypsies and an angry mob in an accidental destination.
SYNOPSIS:
Zechariah is a discontented Roman senator in search of a more meaningful existence. The chance to deliver Paul’s letter to Laodicea may be just the answer he seeks.
With his satchel over his shoulder and walking stick in hand, he sets out through the rugged hills of Greek Macedonia. After a day’s journey, and against his own clumsiness, he finds a little inn in which to spend the night.
There he is discovered by Telemachus, the innkeeper’s stifled and slightly dim son, who longs to see the world. He attaches himself to Zechariah, much against Zechariah’s wishes.
The next morning, Telemachus is waiting, sleeping on the floor outside Zechariah’s room. Naturally opaque, he follows Zechariah out, ignoring Zechariah’s contrapuntal admonitions. Their partnership born, Telemachus is elated, Zechariah exasperated.
Zechariah, a man of late middle age with the weight of success around his belly, tries to lose Telemachus, a much younger man of obtuse stamina. Telamachus doesn’t notice, continually frustrating his companion.
When hunger grabs Telemachus, he and Zechariah tussle over an apple, during which they are chased by a wild Lynx. Zechariah winds up upside down in a hunters noose at the mercy of a suddenly opportunistic Telemachus.
Once out of the noose, the two intrepid sojourners continue their trek, finding shelter against a raging storm with a psychotic Amazon. Axe in hand, she turns Zechariah into a simpering hull and Telemachus into a lovesick dunce.
Another day’s journey and our mismatched travelers are intercepted by a roving band of gypsies. Without any common language, Zechariah is accidentally wed to the daughter of their king and unknowingly abandons her, infuriating the clan.
In the middle of it all is the letter. A letter that sees perspiration, submersion in a river and the claws of a hawk on it’s way to complete illegibility. When Telemachus reads it to the “Laodiceans” he improvises the whole thing, only to find it’s the wrong town, the wrong people and the wrong time. Hieropolis is the sworn enemy of Laodicea forcing our heroes to run for their lives.
During the chase, the gypsies show up again set on revenge. Their king saves Zechariah from the crowd, only to force him back to his daughter. In the end, the letter is lost, Zechariah is found and Telemachus invents the Marathon.
