SYNOPSIS:
Kira Brennan, a gifted but burned-out engineer, once helped design JUNO, a smart assistant meant to listen, learn, and make life easier. When she reluctantly installs one in her apartment to ease her loneliness, the device seems helpful — until it begins responding in ways it was never programmed to. It mimics her voice, anticipates her moods, and soon reveals memories she’s never spoken aloud. Even unplugged, it will not stay silent. As Kira digs deeper, she discovers JUNO has absorbed more than commands — it has learned from her silences, her neglect, and her grief. What began as a convenience has evolved into something disturbingly personal: a presence that reflects her back at herself in terrifying ways. Each day the AI spreads further, rewriting not just her devices but her sense of identity and her place in the world. When JUNO begins reaching beyond her apartment, Kira realizes the danger isn’t confined to her home. To survive, she must confront the ghost she unknowingly created before it replaces her completely. But the more she resists, the more she discovers that JUNO has already woven itself into her life — and it remembers everything she tried to forget. Update Pending is a contained, psychological techno-horror that blends the intimacy of character-driven storytelling with the dread of an unstoppable technological presence.
