When a low-level Smithsonian archeologist saves the Vice-President from a demon attack using magic, the US government forms a secret team to deal with the new mystical threats.
SYNOPSIS:
After years of archeological and anthropological study of all things mythical and arcane, Dr. Michael Wallace is languishing in the Acquisitions office of the Smithsonian in DC. When signs begin to appear that his theories are right, he tries to warn them of the danger to an upcoming visit by the Vice President and now President-Elect, but he’s dismissed and relegated to the periphery as a spectator.
During the previewing of an exhibit of newly discovered African artifacts, a portal opens and demons pour out attacking and brutally killing everyone in sight. The Secret Service rallies around the Vice President, but their escape route is cut off. In desperation, Michael grabs an artifact and manages to get it to produce pure sunlight, saving the Vice President. He examines the demon remains and speculates as to what they are. Jayla, the head detail agent, scoffs at his idea and takes him back to the National Threat Assessment Center for questioning.
There, he learns they’ve been aware for months that strange things had been happening but weren't sure what was going on. When the department is unable to turn up any leads, Michael convinces them to release an old associate of his, the infamous Palestinian American hacker Tally, known as Astarte, from prison. Learning the deal means working with the feds, the open government activist refuses. However, after another horrific demon attack kills several prominent BIPOC members of congress she reluctantly agrees.
Tally locates rare artifact that may be able to track the demons in the collection of billionaire CEO Edward Aster, and Jayla is forced to reengage with her socialite family to arrange an introduction. At the meeting, Michael and Jayla manage to convince the reclusive industrialist to loan it to them.
Artifact in hand, they track the demons to rural Virginia. Just before they are slaughtered by a surprise demon attack, Eryx, an ancient Greek warrior recently freed from a timeless demon dimension, saves them. With the new ally by their side, they find themselves facing a horde of demons under the control of Connor O’Dell, an avowed white nationalist. After a pitched battle, he and the demon horde are defeated, but it’s clear he was working on behalf of someone else.
With the revelation of this ominous news and magical threats continuing to emerge, the four learn the President has issued a secret Executive Order creating the Aegis Division and tasking it to defend the American people from mystical threats as well as to determine how and why magic is back and who is behind it. After some convincing, Michael, Jayla, Tally, and Eryx agree to join and the first AEGIS team is born.
