In a superstitious village, a fierce mother fights to protect her twin sons when she is accused of witchcraft. As fear turns to violence, she uses the villagers’ own paranoia against them, becoming the legend they tried to destroy.
SYNOPSIS:
Set during the waning years of the late Roman Empire, Motherwolf is a visceral historical fantasy about a woman whose devotion to her children turns her into the very monster her society demands she be.
Lucina, a widowed mother living on the edge of a rigid, Christianized village, survives by hunting and foraging in the nearby forest with her teenage twin sons, Cassius and Silvanus. From the opening, Lucina is shown as both nurturing and ruthless: she teaches her boys to hunt, to kill cleanly, and to respect the lives they take. The forest is not a place of superstition to her- it is law, survival, and truth. The village, by contrast, is governed by fear, hunger, and moral absolutism.
Lucina and her sons are barely tolerated by the villagers. Her refusal to remarry, her absence from church, and her comfort in the woods mark her as suspicious. Father Octavius, the village priest, preaches rigid obedience and submission, while Marcella, a bitter, childless woman, becomes Lucina’s most vocal accuser. As food grows scarce and tensions rise, the villagers begin to blame Lucina for their misfortune, whispering that she consorts with beasts and dark forces.
The situation escalates when Cassius, desperate and angry after being harassed in the village square, steals food. He is brutally captured and publicly humiliated. Rather than punishing him privately, Father Octavius ties Cassius inside the chapel, declaring that Lucina will be forced to reveal herself. The village prepares to “cleanse” the forest once and for all.
Lucina returns home to find her cottage burned and her sons taken. Injured, bleeding, and alone, she flees into the scorched forest. As the fire spreads, she collapses from exhaustion and blood loss. There, she encounters a pack of wolves—not as phantoms or visions, but as real, physical animals. They recognize her not as prey, but as kin. In a brutal, ritualistic act, the wolves kill her, ripping her apart completely, only for Lucina to resurrect moments later, her body reforging itself into something new. She is not fully a wolf, nor fully human. She has become a weapon shaped by grief, rage, and survival.
Reborn, Lucina prepares with cold precision. She retrieves her dead husband’s armor, marking the return of a warrior identity long denied to her, and lays traps throughout the forest. Meanwhile, Cassius and Silvanus are imprisoned beneath the chapel. Marcella secretly feeds them and attempts to persuade them to abandon their mother, offering safety in exchange for obedience. Cassius wavers, disturbed by what Lucina has become, while Silvanus remains fiercely loyal.
Lucina attacks the village methodically, turning the forest into a killing ground. Villagers are maimed, trapped, and slaughtered. Panic fractures the mob mentality. The “hunt” collapses into chaos as the village begins to destroy itself.
Lucina finally storms the chapel, confronting Father Octavius amid fire and crumbling faith. In a harrowing confrontation, Octavius condemns her as Eve reborn, a woman who dared to step outside submission and dragged the world into ruin. Lucina responds with a devastating monologue about childbirth, abandonment, and the impossible performance of womanhood demanded of her. She kills Octavius with extreme violence, literally tearing him apart on the altar as the church burns, destroying both the man and the institution that empowered him.
Lucina rescues her sons from their chains and leads them out as the village collapses into flames. The violence belongs solely to the people who created it.
At dawn, Lucina and her sons stand on a ridge overlooking the smoldering remains of the village. The forest, though burned, is already beginning to regrow. Lucina makes it clear that the wolves were never meant to finish this for her.
As they flee into the woods, Marcella emerges, broken and desperate, begging to be taken with them. Lucina initially refuses, stating that Marcella made her choices. But in a final act of complicated mercy, she offers Marcella survival- not forgiveness, but the chance to walk away.
In the epilogue, years later, Cassius and Silvanus are grown men establishing a new settlement far from the ruins of the old world. Cassius, hardened and authoritative, and Silvanus, thoughtful and nurturing, work together to build something different. Cassius leaves a carved wolf totem at the base of a marked tree, a quiet acknowledgment of their mother’s legacy.
Lucina herself has passed into legend.
Motherwolf ends with the suggestion that civilization survives not by purity or obedience, but by those willing to become monstrous when the world leaves them no other way.
