FIVE STAGES (A SHORT SCREENPLAY)
By William Blackmon

GENRE: Drama, Thriller
LOGLINE: A vengeful veterinarian in the throes of divorce from her wealthy husband matches wits with her husband’s lawyer during a settlement negotiation that goes horribly wrong.

SYNOPSIS:

Deidre Lawrence, an accomplished veterinarian and equestrienne, and her husband Jeffrey, partner in a highly progressive architectural firm, are in the process of divorce, something Deidre does not want. Estranged from each other during this time, Deidre lives in the city while Jeffery resides in their country home in Greenwich, Connecticut on their estate and stables. While the reason the two middle-age professionals are divorcing is not exactly known, we are led to suspect it is related to Jeffrey’s secret of taking male lovers behind Deidre’s back, a detail that she has known for some time now. The fact that during their separation Jeffrey has chosen to remain in Connecticut is particularly heartbreaking to Deidre since she is the rider and breeder of their stable of expensive horses. And, to add insult to Deidre’s injury, after announcing to her he was leaving to be with his latest unknown lover, Jeffrey sold off Deidre’s three breeding mares and had her ‘prized stallion’ gelded citing his ‘over aggressiveness’ but actually because of Deidre’s lack of cooperation with his initial settlement offer. So, after months of putting off the inevitable, several contentious meetings with Jeffrey's attorney (Ian Browne) and struggling alone through the five stages of grief, Deidre agrees to meet with Browne one last time to discuss the final divorce settlement. Apparently rational and in complete acceptance of her situation, Deidre invites Browne to her apartment where we find that in her fifth stage of grief, Deidre has five shocking revelations for Browne.
