But a buddy of mine, his father in-law is an attorney, he says you know when a person really loathes the people in his family, he gives the money to some charity or some bull crap like that. KATHERINE Do you think that will happened today? ERIC Who knows Kat. Who knows. There’s a brief pause between Eric and Katherine. KATHERINE What was going on with you? ERIC When? Aaron opens the manila envelope, pulls out the will, and begins to read the will. AARON (CONT’D) I, Russell Addicus Cambridge declare this to be my last will and testament. I am married to my wife Mabel June. We have one living child Elizabeth Rose and her husband Pierce McGree. Aaron stops reading the will, looks up from reading the will, and addresses everyone in the room. AARON (CONT’D) I will skip the legalistic and just read to you who gets what. You are, of course, welcome to read the entire will for yourselves. (goes back to reading the will) I leave my wife Mabel June our condo and one hundred twenty thousand dollars. To my lovely daughter Elizabeth Rose and her husband Pierce McGree, I leave you my summer home on Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, ninety thousand dollars and my cat Logan. (beat) To my dear brother Theodore Vincent Cambridge and his wife Tanya, I leave you my rock collection. This collection is of no value so don‘t even think of trying to cash it in. THEODORE (rolls his eyes) Cheap ass. AARON (continues reading the will) To my sister Betty Florence and her husband Robert William Satterfield, I leave you my Beanie Baby and Beanie Buddy collection along with my stamp collection. To the nephew I never met Eric Pelton Satterfield, WE SEE a surprised look on Eric’s face when he hears his name announced in the reading of the will. AARON (CONT’D) I leave you my hotel on Easter Island, Poike Pacifica. This is a dream come true opportunity. I trust you to do the right thing and keep the hotel in the family. There is a hostile reaction coming from The Cambridge family except for Eric and Katherine who are in shock of the outcome of what they just heard. Aaron continues to read the will. AARON (CONT’D) The rest of my earnings will go to the Save The Lions Project and any animal organization of my wife and daughter’s choice. Betty rises from her chair with a malicious clamor to the reading of the will. BETTY So this is it? The blue collar couple gets the Ritz Carlton and we get some stupid rock collection? Aaron flips over the back of the piece of paper and turns it back over to the front. AARON I believe so. BETTY I can’t believe this. So this is what we were left with? He was always the favorite. This is the same person whose whole life believed that somewhere in a basement, there’s a man saying I just invented people. THEODORE Oh jeez Bitchy Betty. Nothing is ever good enough for you. All you ever do is whine and complain. You get some cute stuffed animals and all you’re grousing about is him being the favorite. I got the raw end of the deal and i’ m the middle child. BETTY Oh please Theo, keep talking, one day you'll say something intelligent! The bickering of the Cambridge family begins to ignite about the outcome of the will. Eric and Katherine are still sitting in their chairs. Eric still sitting in his chair turns to his right facing Katherine with a surprised look. ERIC Kat, do you know what this means? KATHERINE What? ERIC We can quit our jobs and move to Easter Island. KATHERINE That’s the island with the big heads right? ERIC The roughly the size of your mother’s ass yes. KATHERINE Eric, I don’t know what you did to this uncle of yours? ERIC I guess him not meeting me must have made me the favorite. (CLANKS his CHAMPAGNE GLASS with Katherine) Cheers. Eric and Katherine hug and celebrate amongst themselves in their seats. JUMP CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - LOBBY - NIGHT PAN ACROSS The inside of the hotel is empty and looks like a riot started in the hotel. The front door to the Poike Pacifica is open. The smell of mold and mildew escape the hotel. The floor boards on the first floor are missing. An iron rod bed is on its side in the right side of the hallway. The plaster from the ceiling is impaled by the second story floor boards. A sordid porcelain bath tub is laying upside down on the staircase. The tables on the first floor are splintered and broken. KATHERINE You don't understand, Eric and Katherine are walking throughout the hotel scanning out how bad the hotel is. The wood floorboards continue to creaking as they are walking. KATHERINE (CONT’D) Honey, in case you haven’t noticed, we can't stay here. Eric following behind Katherine and kicking up some loose boards. ERIC This was not mentioned in the will. KATHERINE Did you know your uncle even had a hotel? ERIC Sweetheart, I never knew this even existed until now. KATHERINE What your uncle should've said in the will was, Hey Eric, I'm your uncle. And guess what, I'm screwing you out of a crap load of money and giving it to my cheating wife. ERIC All right Katherine. Calm down. You whining about it, is not going to make this hotel any more in a disarray than it already is. KATHERINE (irked) Eric, look at this mess. We quit our jobs for this? At this point, I'll trade what's her name for that useless rock collection. How are we supposed to adapt? There's no food, water, plumbing, or fuck anything. How the hell are we supposed to make any money here? ERIC We'll just have to go day by day. Katherine rolls her eyes, exits the right of the hotel lobby, begins to mock Eric’s answer. Eric walks around the lobby of the hotel trying to figure out what to fix first. As he is walking around the lobby Eric is looking at the painting’s of the different Easter Island heads until he comes across a certain picture of his Uncle Russell standing next to one of the Easter Island heads. DEEP FOCUS on Eric looking at the framed picture closely from what it looks like a very young picture of his Uncle Russell standing next to Easter Island head (Moai). The Moai winks at him. ERIC (untwists the lid of the flask and takes a swig) Well, whoever it was, had the best brandy. KATHERINE Honey, you don't know how long that brandy has been in that flask? ERIC Sweetheart, the longer brandy ages the better it gets in flavor. KATHERINE So, what are we going to do with the body? ERIC I don't know. Let's cross that bridge when we get there. DISSOLVE TO: EXT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - FRONT PORCH - DAY Katherine walks out to the front porch to have a cigarette. There is a cool breeze blows onto the front porch. SETH I'm an electrician and I'm more than happy to help fix the hotel. Wiring and a little bit of updating this place, this hotel will be one of the best vacation spots. ERIC Thanks man. I appreciate it. I may take you up on that. Eric and Seth exit the right and ascend up the stairs. CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - LOBBY - DAY Eric and Seth coming up from the basement. Seth and Eric exit right down the hallway. As Seth and Eric are walking they are dusting themselves off and spitting the dirt out of their mouths. ERIC Thanks Seth again. Katherine is standing behind the desk watching Seth and Eric dusting themselves off. They stop in front of the lobby desk, Eric thanks Seth for bringing the skeleton into the basement. Seth continues down the hallway to his room. Katherine leans her body over the desk, rest’s her arms on the desk, folds her hands, and turns her head to the right facing Eric. KATHERINE Hey sweetie, I’m just curious, how much did you charge him for a night? ERIC Uh, I didn't. He's staying here for free. KATHERINE (eyebrows raised) How can you charge that man a free room when we could use the money? Eric walks behind the desk, kneels down behind the desk to look for a book to register the guests. After Eric slams the log book on the desk, an old fashion bath tub falls through the floorboard from the second floor and onto some chairs in the lobby. ERIC (looks up from the desk) That's going to leave a mark. KATHERINE (Rolls her eyes and exits right.) I've had enough excitement for one day. I'm going to bed. DISSOLVE TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - SIDE OFFICE - NIGHT PAN RIGHT Eric is in the side office sitting at a desk reading at the lodge book records under a lone gooseneck lamp. Eric turning the pages and notices that people have checked into the hotel and never check out. He takes off his glasses and begins to rub his eyes. ERIC (V.O.) This doesn't make sense. These guests check in and the only check out times I see have a different last name than the people checking in. A man’s voice comes out of no where. MAN’S VOICE(O.S.) It is a little funny if you think about it. Eric stops rubbing his eyes, puts his glasses back on, ascends from his chair and gets up to look around to see where that noise came from. CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - LOBBY - NIGHT Eric comes out to the lobby and sees GREG COLLIER, sixty-two, a miniature person sitting on the couch next to the bathtub with his cane resting across his lap. ERIC Who the hell are you? GREG Have you suddenly become so dense that light now bends around you? It could be the air, water, who the hell knows what happened to all the hotel guests that check in here. ERIC And you are? GREG My name is Greg Collier. I use to manage this hotel. ERIC How long has this hotel been condemned? What’s the history of the hotel? Greg stands up with the support of his cane using his left hand and limps to his left towards the picture window. GREG The eighties. (beat) Since Mr. Cambridge retired and went back to the states briefly, no one would bother to take responsibility of the hotel due to its circumstances. Eric watches Greg limp over to the picture window. GREG (CONT’D) When Russell came back recently to the island because he was thinking about re opening the hotel. Then one day, I guess he was going out for a walk and after that, I didn’t hear anything more. ERIC How do you know Mr. Cambridge? GREG I use to managed the hotel. How do you know him? Greg pauses and turns his body at a one hundred eighty degree angle towards Eric. ERIC He's my uncle. GREG Oh yeah? How’s your uncle doing? ERIC (perplexed) He’s dead. He’s been dead for quite sometime. (beat) So what else do you know about Pacifica? GREG (goes back to facing the window) Well, not too much. The guest would sign in and the only time to sign the guests out, is through the coroner when we would sign the papers out. ERIC How is it that you're not dead? GREG (Hands behind his back looking out the window) My speculation is, I wasn't a guest at the hotel. I tried to get a scientist to come to the hotel to see the problem but due to the people dying in the hotel, the scientist declined to come by. ERIC So what brings you back? GREG Business. ERIC So what you're saying, Mr. Collier? And please correct me if I'm wrong, but we're living in a Stephen King novel? The fact that people sign the guest book their going to keel over? Greg turns his head away from the window and looks at Eric. GREG Well, the Stephen King novel reference novel is a bit crass, wouldn’t you think? ERIC So basically what you’re telling me is that my wife and I have inherited a two story hotel portal to the afterlife? Greg turns his head and looks at Eric with a blank stare. ERIC (CONT’D) Thank you, Mr. Collier. I'm going to bed. Good night. I’m sure I’ll rest a hell of a lot easier hearing all that. (mutters) You freak of nature. I’m in the left side of the hallway fixing the door panel. Katherine bolts to the left over towards the room where Eric is fixing the door panel. INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - DAY Eric is on a ladder fixing one of the door panels of the rooms. KATHERINE (pointing with her left index finger and painting very hard) Honey, Mr. Collier in Room 603 is dead. ERIC That's not possible. No one's been up there. KATHERINE Can you get upstairs? ERIC Do you have any idea where your husband is? GRETA I don’t know. He left early this morning do something god knows what. ERIC Well still I need him to come up here and determine how Mr. Collier died. DR. VLADMIR RABINOWICH (O.S.) Greta? Where are you? Greta? DR. VLADMIR RABINOWICH, Greta’s husband, seventy-two, cardiologist, balding, has a grey beard, and Greta's husband Dr. Rabinowich the room where Eric, Katherine, and Greta. DR. VLADMIR RABINOWICH (CONT’D) Oh Greta, here you are. Did you not like the room we we’re in? (stops talking and notices Greg on the floor.) Oh my god, what happened? Eric still kneeling down next to Greg looks up at Dr. Rabinowich. ERIC Doctor we have another one down. Dr. Rabinowich walks over to Greg who is deceased, kneels down, and places his two fingers along the lower edge of Greg’s jaw bone. DR. RABINOWICH The subject looks to be dead for seventy two hours. What seemed to have killed this man? ERIC Well we don't know doc. We were hoping you knew. Dr. Rabinowich stands up and put his hands in his pant's pockets. DR. RABINOWICH My guess is, he could've taken a blow to the head. But that couldn't be possible because he would've had blood coming out of one of the facial orifices in his body. The cause of death to this gentlemen is yet to be know. (beat) I'll put in a call an courier to make sure they run a full autopsy when I get back to the states. What's the name of the subject? ERIC Greg Collier. He use to manage this hotel a long time ago. DR. RABINOWICH How old would you say he was? ERIC I would have to say, mid sixties. DR. RABINOWICH Thank you Mr. Satterfield. Dr. Rabinowich exits the right of the room suite. Greta walks over to Katherine and holds her right hand. GRETA Katherine, are you going to be ok? I'm a little concerned about the two of you. KATHERINE Oh Greta, I'm fine. GRETA Are you sure? KATHERINE I'm sure, Mrs. Rabinowich. GRETA Ok. (pats her left hand on the right hand) If you need anything at all you knock on my door. I'm in Room 1206 at the end of the hall. Greta let’s go from Katherine’s hands. KATHERINE Thank you. Greta exits the room and follows her husband to their suite. KATHERINE (CONT’D) God, why can’t my mom be like that? ERIC Because you're mother's idea of fun is listening to telemarketers. Katherine snickers. Eric looks up and smiles at his wife. ERIC (CONT’D) Do you remember that one summer we took your mom to Brigantine Beach and she had that monthly thing, you know the same thing you get, and a bunch of kids ran out of the water screaming, Red Tide! Red Tide! Katherine begins to laugh. ERIC (CONT’D) (made a corner smile) You know your mother is the only person I know to have cup holders on her moo moo. KATHERINE Thanks sweetie. I needed that. Katherine walks over to Eric and the couple begin to wrap their arms around each other. KATHERINE (CONT’D) With all the stress going on, I was about have a conniption. ERIC Katherine, I love you. KATHERINE I love you too. ERIC What happened to us? KATHERINE The Money Pit Hotel. Katherine and Eric are about to exchange a kiss until they hear Seth’s voice. SETH (O.S.) Mr. Satterfield? Eric and Katherine turn their heads towards the door and WE SEE Seth standing in the doorway frame. ERIC What is it, Seth? SETH I really think you need to come down stairs. ERIC What's wrong? SETH We have a code red on our hands. ERIC What’s going on? SETH The Chilean Government is here. ERIC What’s the government of Chile doing in Poike Pacificia here? SETH I don't know. You really need to go downstairs. Eric rolls his eyes, sighs, and begins to exit Greg’s room and walks downstairs to the lobby with Katherine following behind him. INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - STAIR CASE - DAY HEROIC SHOT Eric and Katherine are heading down the stairs to the lobby of the hotel. CUT TO: TWO CHILEAN GUARDS Are standing in the lobby of the hotel with their hands behind their back at attention. ERIC What can we do for you gentlemen? CHILEAN GUARD 1 We have reason to believe that is hotel has had a mysterious of unusual deaths in this hotel. ERIC That's correct. CHILEAN GUARD 2 Care to fill us in. ERIC No. I couldn't kill a house fly if I could. KATHERINE It's true. The only time he killed something was my apatite and he was cooking Diver's Delight. Chilean Guards one and two show no sign of emotion and give harsh dictation. KATHERINE (CONT’D) You know, because its got fish and you have to cook it a certain way, GUARD 1 We'll be the ones asking the questions. Eric begins to get agitated. ERIC Look, you come to my hotel, you give my wife the brush-off, question thing's that doesn't make sense and you have the nerve to tell my wife to shut up?! KATHERINE (calming Eric down) Honey calm down. Let me handle this. (to the Chilean Government Officials) What my husband is trying to say guys, is no one killed anybody at the hotel. The people that are killed, did not show any signs of any harm done to them. Guard 1 is looking through a small book of address and comes across a name that stands out to him in the book. He then at that point looks up from the book and begins to question Katherine and Eric. GUARD 1 Which one of you is Russell Cambridge? ERIC (perplexed) That's my uncle. He died a year ago. Is there a problem? GUARD 1 So what's your name? ERIC I'm Eric Satterfield and this is my wife Katherine. GUARD 2 This island is under quarantine until the mysterious murders have been solved. Eric looks at Katherine. Both are in shock. Guard 2 serves Eric a piece a paper about why the reason the island is under quarantine. GUARD 2 (CONT’D) No one can come or go off the island without my permission. We will shoot on sight. The Chilean Guards will outline the island to make sure nobody escapes. Eric reading the piece of paper and looks at Katherine in confusion. DISSOLVE TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - LOBBY - NIGHT All the hotel guests are in the lobby talking amongst themselves about what and why they’re in to hotel lobby. Eric enters the lobby. Katherine is behind the lobby desk. ERIC Ok. Let’s get everyone settled down here. The HOTEL GUESTS slowly get quiet. Eric continues to speak. ERIC (CONT’D) The reason why I asked all of you here, the Chilean government has the island under quarantine on people arriving and departing from the island. For this reason being, I don't know if you're aware, there a are a series of mysterious deaths at the resort. There has been another death since Greg Collier in Room 603. Now we have one in Room 701. HOTEL GUEST 1 Who was it? ERIC Former ambassador to the U.N. Johnathan Tennabalum. HOTEL GUEST 2 Whose the murderer? ERIC We don't know. My wife and I are still trying to figure it out. HOTEL GUEST 1 Do you have any idea how long these murders have been occurring? ERIC Again we don't know. HOTEL GUEST 2 How do we know you're not the one killing these people? How we know that you haven't snapped and finished us all off? ERIC Because I've been the one fixing this place. Besides, where would I find the time? How do I know you didn't kill these people? Or you? Or even you? (walking around the room questioning people like an attorney in a court room) What about you Father Ayers? You're a man of the cloth aren't you? Did you break one of the ten commandments oh what's that one called. FATHER AYERS, fifty-seven, Catholic Priest, walks over to Eric to console him and Eric steps away. FATHER THOMAS AYERS Thou shall not kill. ERIC Thank you. Are you the one slaying these guest at my hotel? FATHER AYERS I have no idea what you're talking about? ERIC All right cut the biblical act! Are you the one killing these people? FATHER AYERS Son I'm not about to break one of the commandment's given by… ERIC (interrupts Father Ayers) Stop calling me son! You’re not my father! Katherine is behind the front desk begins to tear up for her husband, leaves from behind the desk, and exits the lobby. ERIC (CONT’D) What about you Courtney Turnbull? Former child star turn pole dancer, how do I know that someone could've asked you a question and you mistake the person from ex- husband number three and you could've killed him? COURTNEY TURNBULL, twenty-five, former child star. Stringy blonde hair, roots showing, rail thin, small amount of cocaine dust underneath her right nostril and wearing coke bottle sunglasses. COURTNEY TURNBULL Because it's hard to get the big picture when you have such a small screen. ERIC I've only got one nerve left, sweetheart and you're getting on it. COURTNEY (rolling her eyes) Whatever. I’m going to my room. This was a waste of time/ ERIC So none of you know? None of you know about the murders that are going on? Huh? Nobody's going to fess up? You know what that's fine. No one is going to grow a back bone and admit to these murders. That's fine. Because until these murders keep on happening the island is quarantined until further notice. DR. RABINOWICH Now just a damn minuet, Mr. Satterfield! Who says you can put this island on lock down? ERIC The Chilean Government came to the hotel earlier today and they told us that nobody is to come in or out of the island until the murders are solved. DR. RABINOWICH But Greta and I have a charity auction! We have to go to in a couple days! ERIC (slowly walking towards Dr. Rabinowich) Why the sudden rush doctor? Huh? All the sudden there's been a series of murders and automatically you and your wife want to flee the island? DR. RABINOWICH What's that supposed to mean? Greta calms her husband and walks up to Eric. GRETA Eric honey don't you think you're taking these murders a little bit to the extreme? ERIC I don't know, Greta. You seem to be playing the ingenuous house wife card a lot. GRETA What the hell is that suppose to mean? ERIC That innocent wife card may work on your husband but it's not working on me. This afternoon when you discovered the smell from Mr. Collier's room, did you say you just now discovered the smell? DR. RABINOWICH Yes I did say that. Are you saying I killed Mr. Collier and tried to cover it up? ERIC (looks him in the eye) You tell me. I was real perplexed when I asked for a doctor and you just all the sudden, your husband came up to the room like a blood hound looking for deer at night. GRETA Mr. Satterfield, he came up to the room because he couldn’t find me number one. Number two if you think I killed a person I've never met, then you my friend have enough sawdust between the ears to bed an elephant. Who do you think I am The Ice Man? ERIC I think you and your husband know something about these murders. You two go out on your, walks and how do I know you're not the one releasing this odor that's causing the people to drop like a 1950's teenage school girl when she sees Elvis for the first time? Dr. Rabinowich rises from his chair to defend his wife. DR. RABINOWICH Mr. Satterfield, you are making a damned fool of yourself. ERIC Well, doctor if you value your life and hopefully your wife does too, I suggest you stay here where you are safe. (finishes addressing the doctor and continues talking to the people in the room) That goes for all of you. The Chilean Government are natural born killers. I wouldn't take a dip in the ocean if I were you. If you were to come close the jetty's on the island, they'll kill you just assume look at you. I'm sorry if I have to scare you all of you like this but I'm not about the hide something life threatening from any of you. So please try and get a good night sleep. I know I won't be able to sleep. But all of you please try and get a good night sleep. Tomorrow's a new day. The guest’s went back to their rooms talking amongst themselves. Eric watches the guest’s go back to their rooms and exits from the lobby. Eric exit’s right of the lobby. CUT TO: EXT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - FRONT PORCH - NIGHT Katherine is sitting on the front steps of the porch having a cigarette. Katherine hears the foot steps and looks up at Eric. Eric sits down on the front porch steps next to Katherine. KATHERINE Hey babe, how did go in there? ERIC Tense. Everybody is asking who the killer is? I keep asking question’s and everybody is being tight lipped about their answers. KATHERINE So what do we do? ERIC Katherine, nobody knows what to do. KATHERINE It's bad enough our residents are dropping like flies on this island. To make matters worse, one of them asked me if the guest's should be worried about the Kool Aide being served and if we should change the name of the hotel to Jonesborough. ERIC I'm not worried. KATHERINE These people from the Chilean Government are animals. Now these people are on the island and will shoot anybody trying to come in or out of the island? ERIC Katherine, what do you want me to do? I'm working practically day and night fixing the Haunted Honeymoon and I have you freaking out. I'm maxed out. There's only so much of me can go around. KATHERINE And you don’t think I’m busting my ass around the hotel? How can you be so calm about this? These people out there are about as intimating as James Cagney playing a vegetable. (takes a puff of her cigarette) Eric, you and I have been married for ten years. Ever since we came to the island, I feel that you're keeping something from me. ERIC What do you want to know? KATHERINE Are you killing the residents? ERIC No. Why would you ask such a thing? Katherine puts out her cigarette on one of the steps, leans on her left side on the white staircase railing holding up the roof of the porch. KATHERINE I don't know. Paranoia I guess. ERIC I think we all are. KATHERINE My god of all people to have this curse, why couldn’t your parent’s have this hotel? (beat) At least I would have any mother in-law trouble. ERIC I was going to suggest your mother but I think fat people have a harder disappearing into thin air. Katherine gives Eric a funny look. KATHERINE You really have it out for my mom don’t you? ERIC Someone’s got to. All she’s got is that bird damn bird. KATHERINE True. CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - ROOM SUITE - NIGHT Courtney is in her room suite sitting on her couch, using her credit card to make lines of coke on her mirror. She stops looks at the line and compliment’s herself for doing a good on making the line. She insert’s the straw into her right nostral and does a line. She licks her finger when a silhouette of a man is standing in the door way. Courtney blinks twice very hard and begins to inhale hard through her nose. The silhouette begins to move very slowly towards the door but there is no sound of the door opening. Courtney get’s up from the couch to follow what was in her room. INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT Courtney goes out to the hallway and begins to look around the hall. She get’s annoyed and goes back to her room suite. DISSOLVE TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - ERIC AND KATHERINE'S BEDROOM - NIGHT Katherine and Eric are asleep in bed in the bedroom tucked away behind the side office. Eric begins to toss and turn. A faint voice of Eric's uncle RUSSELL CAMBRIDGE. RUSSELL CAMBRIDGE(O.S.) Eric! ERIC No! RUSSELL(O.S.) Eric! ERIC No Mr. Russo I’m not putting that on the roof. RUSSELL(O.S.) Eric! ERIC NO! CU ON Eric's face dripping with sweat. Eric turns his head to the right, puts on his glasses on his face, his feet in the slippers, and exits from the bed facing left. CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - HALLWAY - NIGHT Eric is walking down the hallway in his bathrobe as he’s putting on his glasses and enters the lobby. INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - LOBBY - NIGHT Russell is sitting on top of the front desk with his briefcase wearing a seer sucker Fitzgerald suit and a straw hat sitting at his right side. His left leg is resting on his right knee. Eric is the one who can see Russell. RUSSELL Eric, you finally woke up. ERIC Who the hell are you? RUSSELL I'm Russell Cambridge. ERIC Who? RUSSELL I'm your uncle. ERIC Oh so you're the asshole that’s put me and my wife through hell. RUSSELL Just like your mother. Never happy with what she has. ERIC Not only that you were that, you were the same guy from the cemetary when my family was having the funeral service for you. (pointing out in the distance of the famed picture of Russell with the Easter Island head) Is that you in the picture looking at that Easter Island head? Russell places his feet on the floor and walks over to the wall where the picture is of him looking at the Easter Island head. Eric is watching Russell walk over to the framed picture. RUSSELL Oh yeah, that was when I had hair. ERIC So you know what picture I’m talking about? RUSSELL Eric, this photo was taken on the island called Hanga Tetenga on the island. (takes a few steps back from the picture) It was weird because after this photo was taken, something happened to me. ERIC I’m going to ask you the same question the guest’s have been asking me ever since they started sloshing in this place, why are people dying in this hotel? RUSSELL Eric, you remind me of myself when I was your age. You’re strong, smart, driven, and quick witted. ERIC (annoyed) Get to the point, Russell! RUSSELL My hotel was losing guests left and right. Greg left, my right hand man, and tells me he can’t handle the people dying and is going back to the states. Poor bastard. ERIC Uh, I actually did see Greg a couple days ago. Russell turns to his left around facing Eric. RUSSELL Was he dead? ERIC Is Greg like four foot seven? RUSSELL Yeah Greg is pretty short for someone of his stature. ERIC Put it this way, he wasn’t transparent and he left sandy foot prints in my lobby. RUSSELL Interesting. As old as he is, I'm surprised he’s still alive. ERIC Russ, you still didn’t answer my question. How did you die? RUSSELL Ah yes that age old question. To tell you the truth, I was walking outside, (looking at the framed picture again) Probably right around this picture was taken, anyway, I went outside to clear my head and one day I was walking and all the sudden I fell to the ground and everything went black. Russell walks back over to Eric and stops in tracks when he sees Katherine. CUT TO: KATHERINE Enters the lobby to get a bottle of water from the mini bar behind the desk and goes back into her bedroom. She doesn’t see Eric and Russell standing in the lobby. Russell stops in his tracks and sees Katherine enter the lobby to get a bottle of water. Eric turns his head to see what Russell was looking at and notices Katherine entered the lobby to get a bottle of water. RUSSELL (CONT’D) Whose the dame? ERIC That’s my wife, Katherine RUSSELL Does your mother approve of her? ERIC No. RUSSELL Figures. ERIC Why do you say that? RUSSELL Because your mother is the type of person that thinks she’s the greatest thing to walk the Earth when in real life, she’s just about as popular as baked beans on a tour bus. ERIC So wait? You just dropped dead? You didn’t have a heart attack. RUSSELL It was so abrupt. I don’t know what happened. All the sudden I had a shortness of breath, my heart rate was dropping, and I fell to the ground on my back. Your mother is familiar with that trick but money was involved and she, well she’s usually awake when this is all going on. ERIC Can you give me a general idea of what to look for? RUSSELL Eric I’d love to help you out but I’m needed on the other side. ERIC (perplexed) Other side? Other side of what? RUSSELL Just the other side, Eric. Good luck. Russell slowly disappears into thin air. Eric shakes his head and exits the lobby. DISSOLVE TO: INT. PAUL TIPTON, sixty-seven, black hair, couple gray hairs but not noticeable, popped blue eyes, average height approaches Eric while he was on the ladder fixing one of the door panel frames. DR. PAUL TIPTON Mr. Satterfield, do mind if I have a word with you? ERIC (continues painting) What is it, Dr. Tipton? Not another body I hope. DR. TIPTON Better. I think I know why these murders are occurring. ERIC And why is that? DR. TIPTON Do know about these big heads outlining the island? ERIC I know about the heads but I didn't know that they were outlining the whole island. DR. TIPTON I was out for a walk around the island I came across that a lot of the statues had scriptures on the bottom of the head. ERIC You don't say? DR. TIPTON I was intrigued and I've been studying Easter Island for over twenty years. Every time I come to this island, I always learn something new about this island. ERIC (stops painting) So what are you trying to say, Paul? The murders going on there was curse put on all the heads on the island? That's what's causing people to die a mysterious death? DR. TIPTON I need you to meet with me tonight at around 12:30 in the morning, Eric. I want to show you the scriptures at the bottom of the statues. ERIC I don't know doc. DR. TIPTON Oh come on. It would do you some good to forget this hotel for at least a couple of hours. ERIC (V.O.) (rubs his eyes and thought to himself) Well, I haven't had a good night sleep in a while. But I got to do this for Katherine and the guests. Nah screw the guests, I have to do this for Katherine. Eric stops rubbing his eyes and finishes his conversation with Dr. Tipton. ERIC (CONT’D) Ok doc. I'll do it. DR. TIPTON Splendid. I want you to meet 12:30 in the morning at Hanga Tetenga. CUT TO: INT. Dr. Tipton assures the guard that Eric is fine. Eric is on the ground breathing hard, sweat running down his face, and has sand on various parts of his body. Dr. Tipton kneels down to help Eric stand up on his feet. Dr. Tipton has two six foot torches laying on the ground by his right side. ERIC (out of breath) Ok I'm here. DR. TIPTON Thanks for being on time, Mr. Satterfield. Eric and Dr. Tipton are now standing up. ERIC You picked a hell of a time to talk to me about something so important. The full moon is reflecting on the Pacific Ocean and even more so on the Moai. DR. TIPTON Mr. Satterfield, this is apart of the island we’re on is called Hanga Tetenga. These heads are called Moai's. ERIC (looks up at the heads) So which one of the heads is supposedly cursed? DR. TIPTON I don't know. I'm still trying to figure it out. The only thing I can figure, is the scripture on the bottom of the statue, it seems to me that a lot of the scriptures are the same. If I come across one that's different, then that's the statue that has the curse. ERIC Do you know what any of the scripture means? DR. TIPTON No. This is why I have to ask one of the islanders. Eric and Dr. Tipton kept walking through the island searching for the cursed head. Both men are holding torches in their left hands looking at the Moai’s on the island. Dr. Tipton puts on his glasses examining the Moai and kneels down on the ground to remove the dead grass at the bottom of the Moai. DR. TIPTON (CONT’D) Oh no. ERIC What is it doctor? DR. TIPTON I think this may be the one. ERIC One what? What are you talking about? DR. TIPTON I think this is the head that was cursed first. (looking at the piece of paper with the cryptic message) I don't recognize the scriptures from the rest of the other Moai's. (crams the paper back into his pocket) This scripture looks like it could be written in Rapa Nui. ERIC What's Rapa Nui? DR. TIPTON Rapa Nui is one of the official languages spoken on Easter Island next to Spanish. From what this looks like on the bottom of the head, this is not written in Spanish. It can only be the other option. It would have to be Rapa Nui. CU on Dr. Tipton’s hands clearing the rest of the dead grass blades from the base of the Moai. Eric kneels down next to Dr. Tipton giving Dr. Tipton some light so he can see what he’s doing while he’s clearing the dead grass. ERIC What does that say? DR. TIPTON I'm not sure. Dr. Tipton reaches for a pen and paper in the pocket of his pants. He takes out the pen and paper write the cryptic message on his right knee. DR. TIPTON (CONT’D) I'm going to copy this and see if and give this to one of the islanders and see if they can translate it for me. Dr. Tipton stands up and begins walk over on another part of island with Eric following next to him on his left side to find one of the islanders sitting in front of a roaring bon fire. The men come across an islander. Dr. Tipton takes his piece of paper from his right vest pocket. DR. TIPTON (CONT’D) Excuse me my friend. I have a question, (reaches in his vest pocket and pulls out his pad of paper) Do you know what this says? The islander takes the piece of paper out of Dr. Tipton’s hand and looks at the piece of paper by tilting his head to the right and left. The islander reaches his hand out to see if he can better understand the writing. Dr. Tipton reassures the islander it's ok and to go ahead and continue reading the piece of paper. ISLANDER (The islander points to the pad) Where do you, DR. TIPTON (finishes his question) Find it? The islander shakes his head yes. DR. TIPTON (CONT’D) I got it from, (points south of the island) That part of the island. ISLANDER This not good. DR. TIPTON What's not good? Dr. Tipton, Eric and the islander walk over to Moai they believe is cursed and causing all the deaths to occur. ERIC Do you have any idea what this cryptic message means? Eric walks back over to the Moai where he and Dr. Tipton were standing. He studies the Moai very closely. At this point in this scene we only hear Dr. Tipton and the islander conversing back and forth about how the island became cursed. TIPTON Eric, do you have any records of the first person to stay at The Pacifica? ERIC I do. But Dr. Tipton, that could've been anybody. Anybody could've stayed on the island even long before the hotel even opened up. DR. TIPTON I need you to do something for me. I need you to look up some sign in records of the first person to stay as a guest as your hotel. ERIC I can go back to the hotel and look for the records. But it might be a while. I still haven't fully organized the hotel. DR. TIPTON Can you do that? ERIC I can but that’s not why I came running over to tell you dr., (beat) What I came to tell you was the framed picture in the lobby I was my uncle standing next to the Moai and died suddenly. Eric stops holding Katherine and turns around to see what Katherine was talking about. KATHERINE Courtney Turnbull? Former child star? Eric creeps up to the very dead Courtney and nudges her with his boot. ERIC Yeah it’s her alright. I’m starting to see the cocaine straw indentation on the left side of her nostril. CUT TO: INT. Dr. Tipton is holding a silver tea kettle in his left hand and is holding a tea cup and saucer in his right hand. He places the saucer on the table and the tea cup on top of it. He begins to pour the tea. As the tea is the string from the tea bag begins to spin. DR. TIPTON Where's Eric? Katherine screws a cigarette in between her lips. KATHERINE (light’s up cigarette) The guards took him away last night. Dr. Tipton stops pouring the tea, places the tea kettle on the table and takes a seat place in the chair in front of Katherine. (beat) Did you ever at some point in your marriage just feel over whelmed from your spouse? DR. TIPTON Sometimes. Why do you feel like that with Eric? KATHERINE Normally, I let stuff like this just blow over but ever since we came to this hotel, I don't know, it seems like it's just one thing after another just hits you all at once. DR. TIPTON Do you blame Eric for moving to Easter Island? KATHERINE I'm not blaming Eric for his uncle dying and leaving him the hotel. That wasn't his doing. But there has been so much occurring. I don't know what to do. Katherine begins to tear up. KATHERINE (CONT’D) I'm sorry doctor, I'm just very weighed down at this point. DR. TIPTON No, it's ok. It’s allot for a couple to take on a hotel. Hell it’s even allot for even one person to take on. I know Eric appreciates everything you do around here. (beat) Katherine, look around at this place. Two years ago this place was a dump. Not even a family of rats would subject themselves to take a crap in here. KATHERINE That’s a very nice thing to say, doc but, there’s still allot that needs to be done. DR. TIPTON This place is really starting to come along. I think you and Eric are doing what you can to make this a presentable hotel. KATHERINE So what do you have going on today? DR. TIPTON (looking around at the Atrium seeing what needs to be done) Well I’m going to be doing some work on this atrium here for a while, take a walk around the island for a bit. I don’t know. We’ll just see what happens. KATHERINE Ok. Well, Dr. Tipton, as usual, it was great talking with you and I have some work to do. Katherine rises up from her chair, turns right towards the steps leading up to sliding glass door that leads form the atrium to the lobby of the hotel. She’s holding her coffee mug with her right hand and her cigarette in the left hand. DR. TIPTON Katherine? Katherine stops in her tracks and turns around facing Dr. Tipton. DR. BETTY AND ROBERT Walk up the front porch steps bickering back and forth at each other like normal. ROBERT Is walking up the steps, he’s struggling with the suitcase trying to hold them together under his arms and holding them with his hands. BETTY Holding her clutch handbag in her left hand, while talking and gesturing with her hands. BETTY Morning, Katherine. KATHERINE Good morning Betty, (goes back to writing in the log book) As usual I pay admission to see you. BETTY Well, as long as you can afford it. ROBERT Betty wanted to see the hotel. I kept telling her it’s probably not that much. BETTY Oh Bobby that’s not true. (to Katherine) We wanted to come by and see the hotel and plus we haven’t heard from you kids in a while. Katherine makes a face and continues to write in the log book. Betty is smoking a cigarette and is looking around the hotel. BETTY (CONT’D) So this is the hotel my brother left you guys? KATHERINE (annoyed) Yeah Betty, it is. BETTY Well, I was expecting something dumpier. How many guest’s do you get coming here a day? KATHERINE Not sure, Betty. BETTY Is my son around any where? KATHERINE No. He’s out. BETTY Do you know where he is? Because I have a bone to pick with him. KATHERINE What about? This hotel is fine. BETTY I’m glad you think so. I wanted to get in on half of the profits my only son is making on the hotel. KATHERINE (stops writing and looks up from her log book) Profits? What profits? What the hell are you talking about? BETTY You know? Profits? Ways we can make money. (beat) Plus the I just need to tell him about the girl Bobby and I set him up with before you two got married. ROBERT No no no no no. You liked the broad Eric dated. Eric and I couldn’t stand her even before he went out on the first date. I only told you that so I wouldn't have to hear you screaming at me about how much of a moron I was for disagreeing with you. BETTY What do you mean scream at you? ROBERT I got to tell you, Betty but when you scream at me, it's enough for me to want to dip my balls in hot sauce. (beat) Beside’s Katherine is a delight to be around. KATHERINE Well thank you, Robert. That’s very sweet. ROBERT Katherine, you’re family now. Please call me dad. Katherine smiles and goes back to writing in the log book. Betty rolls her eyes. BETTY Anyway, do you have any idea when you think my son will be back? Because I have a good idea on how he can make more money on this hotel. Katherine takes a deep breath. KATHERINE I don’t know, Betty. ROBERT No no no. You don’t call Eric’s mother Betty. Call her mom. She likes that. (wraps his right arm around Betty) Don’t you mom? Betty glares at Robert. Katherine exits right of the lobby and enters the side office. BETTY Yeesh, what’s her problem? ROBERT Don’t get involved. Robert and Betty begin to exit the lobby and walk down the hallway. INT. DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - DAY DOLLY BACK Betty and Robert head towards one of the empty rooms. BETTY I hope there’s no problems in their marriage. If there is Eric can come back home and live with us. ROBERT I’m sure thing’s are fine. Katherine’s a good girl. Eric is probably working on something around the hotel. BETTY Bobby, If our doodle bug was working on something around the hotel, don’t you think he would’ve came over and said hi to us? ROBERT Betty, our son was not raised on My Three Sons. Nor is he one of the designers on those Black Eye For The Queer Eye shows you like to watch on Bravo. Robert and Betty come across suite room number 504, inserts the key into the lock, and begins to unlock the door. Robert and Betty enter the room. INT. ROOM SUITE - DAY Betty and Robert enter the room suite. Betty turns the light on with the light switch. BETTY No I know that. But still, would it kill him to come over and see his parents? Would it kill him to say hello at least? Robert goes over to the window and opens the drapes. ROBERT I’m sure he’s probably doing something around the hotel. He had me worried when he dated that one girl that took him to get a manicure and a pedicure. Betty is places the suitcases on top of one of the beds and begins unpacking the suitcase. BETTY Who Sasha? That girl from Calabasas? She was cute. I would’ve rather seen Eric with her than Blue Collar Barbie out there in the lobby. ROBERT (annoyed) You need to stop. Katherine is not a bad person. I happen to like her. Just because she’s not high maintenance, self involved, and has very deep pockets doesn’t give you the right to judge her! She did nothing wrong to us! (beat) Put it this way least she’s not turning him gay. DISSOLVE TO: INT. JAIL CELL - DAY Eric is sitting in a dark and dingy prison in Chile awaiting for bail. Eric has sweat dripping down his face and is watching dog sized rats mating in a corner of his cell. He brings his feet up to where his heels are touching his bottom. Eric is sweating looking around at his surroundings. Spanish and Portuguese swear words are filling the prison walls. There’s fighting going on between cell mates and there’s items being thrown at one another. There’s a banging sound of the baton on the bars. MAN’S VOICE (O.S.) Squatterfield! You made bail! Dr. Tipton approaches the bars to where Eric is. ERIC Dr. Tipton? Where's Katherine? DR. TIPTON She's still at the hotel. She doesn’t even know I’m here. ERIC I'm surprised she's still there. I thought she would've left. DR. TIPTON Listen, I've talked to Katherine and she feels gagged about what's been going on but she doesn't blame you for any of this. But we have to get you back to the hotel to rid this curse. ERIC Paul, I'm not going back to Pacifica. The jail cell door opens on its own. Dr. Tipton enters the cell. DR. TIPTON (slaps Paul across the right face) Are you kidding me? Eric I can't believe your going to forsake Pacifica just because there's a curse you're so close to lifting the curse. ERIC I am giving up Paul! Dr. Tipton slaps Eric on the left side of his face. DR. TIPTON The hell you are! Eric you are so close to lifting this curse. There’s a woman back at the hotel who has stood by you. Believe it or not Eric, Katherine loves you. ERIC How do you know? DR. TIPTON Because, I had a long talk with Katherine this morning and you have no idea what kind of hell she’s going through. ERIC Oh my god. She's probably hates me. DR. TIPTON She doesn't hate you. She's overwhelmed with the murders she can't do anything about. Not to mention the Chilean Goose Steppers coming up like pop ups on your computer aren’t really helping much either. Eric takes a big sigh. ERIC You know what, Dr. Tipton, I’m slowly starting to feel better about what’s going on. DR. TIPTON You should. The hotel is slowly starting to come together. Granted there is allot more work that needs to be done but even so, compared to what the hotel was before, it’s a major improvement to what it was before. Eric and Dr. Tipton exit the jail cell. Dr. Tipton put’s his arm around Eric as they’re exiting the jail cell. DISSOLVE TO: INT. KATHERINE (sits back down going through the log books) I've been talking with Dr. Tipton and he says the only way to stop these mysterious deaths going on in the hotel is to look through the log books. ERIC Oh Katherine, there's no way you're going to go through all those books and find the actual first person that stayed at this hotel. Katherine ignoring her husbands negativity continues perusing through the log book. KATHERINE Eric when did your uncle open this hotel? ERIC I don't know. Probably 1909 or 1910. Why? KATHERINE (looks closely at a date) I have a signature for a Clarence Elmer Kaynard. ERIC Who is he and where would his body be? (beat) Nevermind. Doesn’t matter. I need to get out of these clothes. ERIC (to Katherine) Now I see what you mean. BETTY Hello son, Betty licks her right thumb and rubs it up against the top part of Eric's eyebrow like he is still five years old. BETTY (CONT’D) How are you my dear boy? ERIC (pushes his mother out of the way) Mom stop! I'm a grown man! BETTY Honey, I know but I can tell it's been a while since you were well taken care of. KATHERINE And honey, if stand close enough to your mom, you can hear the ocean. BETTY Katherine, don't you ever speak to me like that. I'm your mother-in-law. KATHERINE You know what, Betty I've had it with you. I love your son! I may not have a lot of money or dress in the finest clothes like you do, but you know what, that gives you no excuse to pretend I don't exist. BETTY My look whose using big words all of the sudden. KATHERINE Eric, I think your mother got up on the wrong side of the coffin this morning. Betty is looking around at the hotel. BETTY So this is the Ritz Carlton hotel my brother left you two isn’t it? (beat) Not exactly what I had in mind but then again, we are talking about my brother. ERIC What are you talking about? ROBERT (warning Betty) Don’t Betty. Don’t do it. BETTY Not do what? Look at him. He’s dirty and my god he’s got that look of defeat on his face. ERIC That’s because i’m tired, mom! I haven’t had any sleep in eighteen hours. I was in a Chilean prison and got no sleep. Katherine and I are working on the hotel day and night. BETTY What did I say? All I asked was is this the hotel his Uncle Russell left him? I wanted to buy you guys out of the hotel. That way your father and I can take over. KATHERINE You know what, Betty, I think you said enough. BETTY You mean like that time you and my son had me convinced that Joplin, Missouri was named after rock legend Janis Joplin and every year on her birthday the whole town of Joplin get’s together for a pot luck dinner. Katherine, Eric, and Robert are snickering amongst themselves. Betty is looking around at everybody laughing. BETTY (CONT’D) Oh to hell with you all. Robert and Katherine exit the lobby and go back to their hotel room. ERIC I needed the laugh. Now i’m going to take a shower and a much needed nap. Eric gives Katherine a kiss on the cheek and exits the lobby and goes to their room. Katherine exits right of the lobby and goes back into the side office in the hotel. INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - SIDE OFFICE - DAY Katherine takes a seat and continues to peruse through the log books to make sure she's got the right name. While Katherine was reading the books there is a loud crunch of wood and a loud scream from a man coming Seth. SETH (O.S.) Ah crap! Katherine get’s up quickly from her chair to see what's wrong. INT. Katherine and Seth kneel down to remove the ply wood flooring from around Seth's left foot. As Katherine and Seth are clearing the floorboards away from his left foot, Betty comes out and sees what’s going on. BETTY Finding comfort in another man I see? KATHERINE Betty, this is one of our guest’s whose also helping out with putting the hotel together. (introducing Seth to Betty) Seth, this Eric’s mom Betty Satterfield. SETH (to Betty) How are you? BETTY I’m doing ok. For the most part. I hope you have allot of money, because she certainly doesn’t have any. Betty exits the lobby and goes back to her room. Katherine and Seth begin to look at each other in surprise. SETH The hell was that about? KATHERINE That’s my mother in-law. SETH Why is she so cold towards you? KATHERINE She’s a very down to earth but, if you ask me, she’s not quite far down enough. SETH What did you do to her? KATHERINE I married her son. SETH (in shock) Eric? That was Eric’s mom? KATHERINE Yeah. Anyway, the first day Eric brought me home to meet his mom and dad, was the first day she tried to find someone better. SETH Wow, I’m glad Eric is nothing like that. He’s a good guy. He seems to care about allot you. KATHERINE Well enough chit chat, let's get you out. As they were clearing the plywood floor boards Katherine lifts up Seth's left foot and places it on the floor and continues to pry away the wood flooring. Five minuets later, Katherine and Seth discover a skeleton at the bottom of the floor. There is a pause between Katherine and Seth. OPEN FLOOR BOARDS A pair of pant’s underneath the floor boards. KATHERINE (CONT’D) Why is there a pair of pant's underneath the floor boards? SETH I don't know. KATHERINE Oh my god! SETH What is it? Katherine clears the floorboards away and comes across a skeleton wearing a suit from what it looks like it could be made in the 1800’ s. Seth kneels down next to her and watches her clear the floorboards. KATHERINE I'm going to guess this was the first guest that stayed at the hotel. SETH Did you check any identification? KATHERINE Where would I check it? Katherine and Seth looked at each other. Seth raises his hands up shoulder length. SETH I'm not going to do it. KATHERINE Oh come on, Seth. What's the skeleton going to do at this point? The skeleton isn't going to ask you to close the boards because he’s feeling a draft? Be real. Seth squishes his face together and brings it back to normal. SETH All right I'll do it. (rolls up his left and right arm sleeves and begins to go through the inside of the skeleton's coat pockets) I can't find any identification to this cadaver. KATHERINE Let me see if I can find any type of identification. Katherine’s eyes are tightly closed and is looking away from the skeleton. Katherine's finger slid against a piece of paper in the left pant's pocket causing herself to have a paper cut on the top of her first finger and began to bleed. KATHERINE (CONT’D) Oww! Fuck that hurts! Katherine puts her index finger in her mouth and takes it back out and begins to shake her hand in the air. SETH What happened? KATHERINE Paper cut. SETH How did you get a paper cut? Seth takes over looking for the identification on the skeleton. He went into the left side of the pant's on the cadaver to find the piece of paper that cut Katherine's finger. Seth's right eyebrow goes from straight to an arch and searches around some more into his pockets. He pulls out a tanned piece of paper with calligraphy writing, begins to read it and lifts up both his eyebrows. SETH (CONT’D) Katherine, what was the name of the person that first came to this hotel? KATHERINE I don't know Clarence Something. Seth glances at the piece of paper again and gives the paper to Katherine SETH I think you need to take a look at this. Katherine holds out her right hand to receive the paper from Seth. CUT TO: PIECE OF PAPER The paper is tan due to the fact the piece of paper is over one hundred years old. WE SEE a signature on bottom right hand coroner of the paper showed a signature of Clarence E. Kaynard in calligraphy script. MATCH CUT TO: KATHERINE Eyes widening when she see the signature. KATHERINE Oh my god. This is it. This is the guy we're looking for. Seth thank you so much for helping me. SETH What did I do? KATHERINE I'll explain later. Katherine rises up from the floor onto her feet, begins to rush down the hall and into her bedroom. CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - ERIC AND KATHERINE’S BEDROOM - DAY Eric is taking a nap on the bed. Katherine quietly enters the bedroom holding the piece of paper with a Cheshire Cat smile. KATHERINE Eric, I have good news. We found him. ERIC (still asleep but half answers Katherine's question) Oh good. Tell the client to set the paint can down. Katherine has a confused look on her face but shakes her head a little, continues slowly walking towards the bed, get’s on the bed, and crawls on all fours over to her husband. KATHERINE Uh honey, I really think you need to wake up for this. (beat) Seth and I found him. ERIC (eyes somewhat awake, turns his to the right side to look at his wife) What are you talking about? Clarence? Whose Clarence? Katherine is on her hands and knees on the bed holding the piece of paper with her right hand. KATHERINE Clarence Kaynard. He's a doctor who first came to stay on the island. We found him under the floor boards in front of the check in desk. (giving Eric the piece of paper) Here's his signature from this piece of paper. Eric half asleep leans on his right side and reaches over with his right hand to look for his glasses, put’s them on his face and begins to read through the Calligraphy. Eric's eyebrows rise. ERIC This is it. This is the guy. CUT TO: EXT. HANGA TETENGA - EASTER ISLAND - NIGHT All the guest from the hotel are sitting Indian style around the Moai with the certain scripture underneath the back of the head of the statue. The Islander is in the center of the circle standing in between Dr. Tipton and Eric. The Islander is holding the bone in his left hand. DR. TIPTON I have you all here tonight to put an end to this curse. By putting a end to this curse we are also putting an end to these mysterious deaths that are occurring on the island. But unfortunately, it’s not that easy. I have in my hand is a bone from the first hotel guest that set foot on Poike Pacifica who died from the curse. (beat) In order for the curse to be lifted I need a living member whose staying at Poike Pacifica. Everyone is sitting in the circle is talking amongst themselves. ERIC (interrupts) Listen, I know, I don’t like the idea but what would you rather see, another person dead? Or the curse lifted? FATHER AYERS (raising his left hand) Is there another way besides sacrificing a living being? ERIC Do you have any other suggestions? FATHER AYERS Is human sacrifice the only way to lift this curse? Eric rolls his eyes. ERIC Would anybody like to step up to the plate? Before I pick some... Off in the distance we hear Betty calling for Eric. BETTY (O.S.) (interrupting Eric) Eric, honey, there you are. Eric looks at Katherine in shock. Katherine rolls her eyes and sighs in disgust. KATHERINE Oh for the love of god, the hell is she doing here? CUT TO: BETTY AND ROBERT Heading their way over towards Eric. BETTY What do you have going on here? ERIC Mom we’re trying to lift a curse. BETTY Curse? What curse? I didn’t know Easter Island had a curse. KATHERINE (annoyed and boisterous) Betty just sit down and give your mind a rest! You being here is a curse in itself. ERIC Mom will you and dad please just sit down! Please! BETTY Fine. You made your point. Betty and Robert find a place in the circle and sit down in Indian Style. Eric looks at the Islander and coaxes him to continue on with the ceremony. ERIC I’m sorry my Islander friend. Please continue. ISLANDER Lifts up the femur bone and begins to recites a sacrificial speech. While the Islander recites a sacrificial speech, dark clouds begin to form into a funnel clouds around where everyone is sitting in a circle holding hands. Seth’s right eye opens up a little bit to see what’s going on and closes his eye again. Lightning to flashes. Wind begins to pick up and swirls around everyone sitting in a circle. Rumbling of thunder begins to boom the south Pacific sky. Wind begins to pick up harder and faster. Dark clouds begin to turn into a funnel cloud. Blood is splattering in the center of the circle. Betty is the one that get’s sacrificed but is not shown just her blood. EXT. HANGA TETENGA - EASTER ISLAND - DAY The sacrificial ceremony is over and the sun is rising off the coast of Punta Cuidado. Everyone leave the circle and goes back to the hotel. Everyone is leaving except Robert. Robert is still sitting when opens his eyes and notices Betty’s martini glass and the butt of her cigarette placed on top of her clutch bag. EXT. PUNTA CUIDADO - EASTER ISLAND - NIGHT There’s a nice breeze blowing along with the beautiful sunrise over the coast of Punta Cuidado. Robert stands up and is holding his now deceased wife Betty’s belongings and is walking over to the coast of Punta Cuidado. He takes a deep breath and sighs in relief. Robert throw’s Betty’s stuff into the ocean. Eric and Katherine are standing beside each other watching what Robert is doing. KATHERINE (front of her arms are crossed) You know, I really hate to say this, but your father looks like he gained a back bone. ERIC (nods) I’ll have to agree with you. Mom was making my father miserable for a long time. She wouldn’t work. I think this may be a new chapter for dad. There’s a smile on Robert’s face. He turns around, goes over to Eric and Katherine and begins to hug them. DISSOLVE TO: INT. MSNBC NEWS CHANNEL STUDIO - DAY Six months later, MSNBC News breaks the story on Poike Pacifica. MSNBC Morning Crew Anchors MIKA BRZEZINSKI, WILLIE GEIST and JOE SCARBOROUGH break the story. MIKA BRZEZINSKI (reporting the news) When you think of Easter Island, what's the first thing that pop's in your head? Mika turns her head to the right towards her cohost Joe. JOE SCARBOROUGH I think of those heads you can see from your back yard? MIKA You are right Joe but, would you ever consider Easter Island to be a great place to own a resort? JOE Not in a million years. MIKA Well, that's what one couple did in our MSNBC News Exclusive and we are the first to bring you this story anywhere. JOE That's right Mika. We have our own Willie Geist on location on Easter Island as we speak with the couple, Mika and Joe look at the screen to their left to talk to Willie. JOE (CONT’D) Willie, can you hear us ok? CUT TO: INT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - LOBBY - DAY Willie has his right first finger to make sure his ear piece in place. He takes his finger out and beings reporting the story. WILLIE GEIST Mika, Joe I'm here out on Easter Island, (takes a quick glance with his head and turns his head back to the monitor) And it's quite a site out here. You wouldn't think someone would have a hotel out here. JOE I know that's what Mika and I were just talking about. Willie, can you tell us how this came about? (walks over to the Poike Pacifica as he's reporting the news) Joe, Mika, I'm walking over the hotel where this whole story took place. This hotel is almost 100 years old and it was built by a man who had an eight grade education and this hotel was a success until there was a curse placed on the (looks up at the name of the hotel above the door and begins to read the name) Poike Pacifica closed it’s doors in the 1980's and it was hard to receive any business. MIKA Willie, can you tell us why there was curse placed on the hotel and who would do such a thing like that? The hotel is beautiful from where we're sitting. I don't understand why anybody would do such a thing like that. WILLIE Mika I'm here with one of the owners of the hotel, (walks up to Eric) Now what's your name sir? WE SEE Eric and Katherine standing behind the front desk in the lobby of the hotel. ERIC My name is Eric Satterfield and this is my wife Katherine. JOHN Now Eric, you're a little bit younger than I anticipated, can you tell me how did you come about this hotel? ERIC This was my uncle's hotel. From what I can gather he was the black sheep in the family and he never really got too much attention from my grandparent's when he was alive. So he left home, went to Easter Island and decided to build this hotel himself from the ground up. JOHN Is your uncle still alive today? ERIC No sir. He passed away two years ago and left this hotel to me in his will. I never met the guy. JOHN Wait a minuet, You never met your uncle and he left this hotel to you in his will? Is that true? (walks over to Katherine) Katherine, is this true? Have you met any of his family members? KATHERINE I have and their a boorish bunch. Eric came from a wealthy family where they really didn't to worry about money too much. But when Eric married me they pretty much disowned him. SPLIT SCREEN WITH MSNBC STUDIOS. MIKA (sticks her head out and brings her head back to ask Katherine a question) Katherine, this is Mika Brzezinski, Katherine looks for Mika and finally saw her on the monitor. MIKA (CONT’D) You're saying that your in-laws didn't accept you because you didn't have a lot of money is that correct? KATHERINE Mika, there’s two habit’s I'd like to kick, the first one is smoking and the second is my mother in-law with both feet. JOE Katherine, I was just looking at my notes here and it says that they have acquired a lot of money over the years and when you and Eric we're at the reading of the will for Eric's uncle, they we're mad at the fact they didn't receive any of the uncle's fortune. Is that true? KATHERINE His mother was just a ungrateful woman. Put it this, way her mind is not grounded to a logic supply. Mika and Joe start laughing. Katherine continues. KATHERINE (CONT’D) Although at Christmas dinner we did have a sentimental moment when I told her about the time when she had only one stomach. MIKA (stops laughing and begins to ask Eric a question) This question is for Eric again, Eric, how did your parent's acquire so much money? ERIC Mika, to this day they won't tell me about their earnings. MIKA (ends the interview) All right thank you Willie Geist with that report. We'll be right back. END SPLIT SCREEN The camera's turn off, John ends his interview, shakes Katherine and Eric's hands, and thanks the couple for the interview. The MSNBC crew leave the hotel. Katherine and Eric are standing behind the desk admiring the work they accomplished and all the people entering the hotel. As Eric and Katherine are admiring the hotel they go from blithesome to disdain. CUT TO: ERIC AND KATHERINE Eric is behind the desk with Katherine crossing their arms. The two of them are joking about Eric’s parent’s. Dr. Tipton walks up the Eric and Katherine at the front desk. DR. TIPTON Good afternoon, Eric. Katherine. KATHERINE Hey, Dr. Tipton. ERIC What’s going on doc? DR. TIPTON Eric, do you remember the bones you and everyone else were coming across around the hotel? Dr. Tipton walks over to staircase that leads from the downstairs lobby and takes a seat on the second step, he leans on the right side of his body on the ornate stair railing. ERIC Yeah. What about them? DR. TIPTON I did an analysis on all of the bones that possibly were human and what I came across, (beat) Well, and this isn’t going to be easy for what i’ m about to tell you. But my prognosis came up on some of the bones being from an animal. Katherine excuses herself and exits the hotel lobby. ERIC Animal? What do you mean like live stock? DR. TIPTON No. Rats. But over time, other animals were introduced to the island. ERIC So what’s with the island that’s supposedly cursed? Or is that not real? Just like the Haunted Mansion at Disney? Is there like some little house on the other side of the island that people go to to change into whatever and then come out and scare the visitors on the island? Is that what this is about? DR. TIPTON Be that as it may Mr. Satterfield, but this island was cursed for a long time. In 1862, Peruvian slaves invaded this island and killing fifteen hundred men and women on the island. Easter Island’s population was decreased to a point where they didn’t bury the dead. ERIC That explains the bones. (beat) Dr. Tipton, when we performed that sacrifice the other night, did we lift the curse? DR. TIPTON Look around, Mr. Satterfield. You and your wife are drumming up business. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Eric takes a look around at all the guests coming into the hotel and can’t help but smile. He exits the hotel lobby to join his wife Katherine out on the front porch of the hotel. EXT. POIKE PACIFICA - HOTEL - FRONT PORCH - DAY Katherine is sitting on the front step of the front porch of the hotel smoking a cigarette. Katherine looks up at her husband. (waking up Katherine) Katherine. Katherine, wake up. Katherine slowly waking up from her nap and looks up at Eric. PULL BACK TO REVEAL Eric is standing over Katherine and scoots her legs over behind him to sit next to Katherine so he can sit down. Katherine is still laying down on the couch. KATHERINE Hey, sorry I dozed off. The fumes from the bleach in the bathroom made me a little light headed. I came out to the couch to lay down for a little bit. ERIC I already took care of the bathroom. I also took care of the rest of the cleaning around the house. KATHERINE Oh wow babe. Thank you so much. ERIC I also have something else to tell you, The sound of the door opens up and footsteps hitting the floor. BETTY (O.S.) Hello? Anybody home? CUT TO: ROBERT AND BETTY Walking into the living room of the apartment. Betty is holding a cigarette in her right hand. Robert follows behind her with a defeated look on his face. BETTY (CONT’D) Oh Katherine, The cream rises to the top. So does the scum on your front porch. CU Katherine’s eyes go from half asleep to wide awake. FADE TO BLACK.
