Clark decides that, to help them reconnect, his family could use a dream vacation on a Hawaiian Cruise, which he announces to his family's cheers and applause. The next day when Clark attempts to claim his promised promotion and bonus, his supervisor Melquist at GastriChem shuts him down citing the poor economy. In an ill-conceived moment of impulse and nobility, Clark quits his job of eight years. While Ellen explains that her boss gave them an upgrade to the Penthouse Suite on their cruise, a despondent Clark struggles to explain to his family there is no promotion, no bonus and no job. The vacation is off. Then Rusty (14 years old) and Audrey (13 years old) explain they've written an app that Google is willing to license from them for a quarter million dollars per year. Suddenly, the vacation is on again! The Griswolds depart from San Diego for a few days at sea before arriving in Paradise. They encounter a wealthy couple, Stanford and Nadia, who cruise frequently. Stanford excels at everything and enjoys messing with Clark whose competitive streak is ignited and, despite mishap after mishap, he becomes obsessed with beating Stanford at something -- anything. Soon each member of the Griswold family is absorbed in their own activities and, like before their vacation, are again spending most of their time apart. As their ship approaches the Islands, Clark and Ellen make a renewed commitment to strike a balance of individual activities and time together. While on a shore excursion with her "Boat Camp" youth group, Audrey becomes separated from her friends and texts Rusty to help find her. Using GPS technology, he quickly finds her and, while attempting to return to the group, they encounter indigenous Hawaiian warriors who capture them and intend to sacrifice Audrey to Péle, the volcano god. When they visit Rusty's YouTube Channel, Clark and Ellen are alarmed to see video of their capture! They quickly rent a helicopter and rush to their rescue. They muster their courage and, despite being outnumbered, defeat several warriors before discovering that, in fact, Rusty and Audrey have volunteered to participate in a ceremonial pageant that is being performed for tourists who think Clark and Ellen's rescue attempt is "all part of the show." The Griswolds are invited to join in on beachside games, activities and a Luau on the beach, as their cruise ship sails away toward the horizon.
