SYNOPSIS:

Sarah Noble, a young FBI Agent sits across a desk from her boss, Area Director Jackson Law. He worries that she has not emotionally recovered from her parents being swindled out of their savings; more importantly that she will blow her undercover to put away Jim Ranger, a big-time telemarketing con artist. She adamantly denies any problem, close to being insubordinate. Law tells her he will keep her on the case but that she is on a very short leash. Soon Sarah is face to face with Ranger, observing his techniques as he swindles an elderly man on the telephone out of five thousand dollars. He makes it look easy, explaining that he is helping people meet their emotional needs through sound financial investments, just as a friend would step in to help out a friend. He wonders if she is up to the job, yet she continues to play a role as someone who simply wants to learn how to be a financial coach. He decides to keep her around in spite of his suspicions. In a short time Ranger overhears a confidential cell phone conversation between one of his most trusted accomplices, Vince Allen, the person in charge of recruiting and training all new sales reps, and someone else. Ranger concludes that Allen has changed his loyalties and now is working with the FBI as a snitch. He decides to snuff out Allen's life. Excessive gambling problems put Ranger at the mercy of a loan shark, Mr. Xia. When Xia puts out a hit to extinguish Ranger's life, Ranger disappears. Ranger's business accomplices worry about his whereabouts. When ten thousand dollars disappear from the company's bank account and revenues flatten, they consider shutting down the operation. But the swindling continues as financial greed takes center stage. Paranoia among the accomplices heightens, as each suspects the other of nefarious deeds. The Deputy County Medical Examiner, Madeline Courier, is assigned to a case, a house explosion that killed a prostitute. The renter, Jim Ranger, is unharmed but has disappeared again. Law and Courier must work together and somehow overcome their history with each other as one-time lovers. Law still has feelings for her that are not reciprocated. Madeline is in love with Ranger, unwilling to imagine the truth of his evil dealings. Matt, one of the reps working with Sarah, confidentially tells her that he is Ranger's son and suspects that his father killed Allen. Then he admits to her the operation is a con game. He is unaware that she is FBI. Matt disappears, and soon commits suicide, fearing he would be the next victim of his father's unpredictable behavior. Ranger is found dead in a shoddy motel. The appearance is that of suicide but other possibilities are not ruled out. Madeline eventually leaves her job so she can start a new life. Matt's suicide and her own uncertainty about herself cause Sarah to resign as an FBI agent so she can discover her true passion.
