SYNOPSIS:
In a rural location, inside their home are Derek and Ginger Todd, and their pregnant teenage daughter, Krista, who needs medical treatment. It is lightning, thundering and raining outside. Derek is on his cell to get an ambulance to their home but the 911 operator says that roads to his home are washed out, and that all emergency vehicles are staying put due to the severe weather conditions. Derek and Ginger try to comfort Krista but they are emotionally unable to come to grips with their own feelings of inadequacies about not being able to help their daughter. They are without hope. Derek contacts the Governor for help, but is refused due to the weather. The Governor also reminds Derek that he was responsible for trying to recall the Governor's election that brought him into office. Ginger, a registered nurse, offers a possible alternative solution. She suggests they all drive to Delphian State Prison, the nearby jail, to ask Dr. Young to treat their daughter. Derek refuses to consider the idea since he was the Judge who sent Young to prison for illegally performing abortions. Derek is pro-life whereas Ginger is pro-choice. They continue to argue until Ginger convinces him the only right choice is to do whatever it takes to save their daughter. After a suspenseful drive to the Prison, the Todd family is confronted with additional problems; the Prison's Warden is on vacation, Dr. Young is not licensed to medically treat patients, Dr. Young refuses to treat the girl, the on-site Prison Doctor is not a specialist, the Prison does not have the necessary equipment and supplies to medically treat Krista, and Krista's illness continues to spiral downward. When it seems all hope is lost, the Deputy Assistant Prison Warden contacts the Governor for help, and convinces him to arrange medical treatment for Krista at Ancilla Urgent Care in an adjoining State. The only remaining hurdle is to persuade Dr. Young to treat the teenager. The crucial element in the dilemma is achieved when Dr. Young changes his mind to treat the teenager, remembering his oath to protect people from harm. The Governor promises him a reduced sentence. The details of the arrangement are kept secret. Ginger assists Dr. Young. The operation is successful, twins are delivered and Krista lives. On the return trip from Ancilla Urgent Care, Derek asks Dr. Young why he changed his mind to treat his daughter. Young says the Governor trusted him to do what was right, and that's all it took. He keeps secret the reduced sentence as he quietly dies in the car on the trip back to prison.
