SYNOPSIS:
After learning he is sterile, the older son, Frank, breaks the news to wife Linda that they are unable to conceive a child. In hopes of gaining the approval of his domineering father, Mr. Trapani, and quell his desire for a grandchild, Frank convinces Linda to pursue a secret sexual affair with his estranged younger brother, Robert, a Catholic priest. She eventually succeeds, but Robert confesses to breaking his vow of celibacy to the Church's hierarchy and is excommunicated. With no one else to turn to, Robert receives help from a now-pregnant Linda and hides out in a private condo while he regroups. Frank feels guilty and tells his father the sordid pregnancy ruse. Mr. Trapani becomes enraged and plans to kill Linda. Linda moves Robert to a second safe house after she feels his life is in jeopardy as well. Mr. Trapani is soon found dead, a victim of arsenic poisoning. Days later, Mrs. Trapani also dies from poisoning. Inspector Aston investigates and considers Frank, Linda and Robert as possible suspects, but he is unable to find Robert for questioning. He also finds little in terms of truth and cooperation from Frank or Linda. Separately, they discreetly scramble to create viable alibis for the night of Mr. Trapani’s death – they both were having illicit sexual affairs and do not want their partners’ identities or their activities divulged. Robert hitchhikes back home, still unaware of his parents’ deaths. He hides as Linda and Frank sneak into the Trapani home at the same time. A fight breaks out between the husband and wife and Linda escapes in time to prevent a confrontation with the police. Frank insists they were both seeking evidence to aid in the hunt for the real killer. Robert goes back into hiding and coordinates with a private investigator to search for more clues. Eventually, Robert goes to his brother's house to tell him he believes he knows who killed their parents. Frank agrees it must be Linda. Robert tells Frank he must find her but that he should not contact him. Frank remains Robert's anchor and devoted brother to bring to justice the real killer.
