A drunk's mysterious connection to Billy the Kid forces him into a conspiracy
involving a military contractor.
SYNOPSIS:
For self anointed Billy the Kid expert Will Bonney, every day is worse than the last. His main claim to fame rests in a failing museum of “authentic” items owned by his hero, Billy the Kid and his progeny, who Will is certain still exist. An abject failure and a drunk that has pissed off just about everyone in town, he has recently set upon the task of drinking himself to death.
But when a young Mexican boy shows up in Will’s house demanding to know if he is “Billy the Kid," Will’s reality is shattered and he begins to mysteriously communicate with none other than the gunslinger, Billy the Kid himself. These unusual interactions force him into a deadly conflict with the private military contractor Inkwell, whose plan to transform the sleepy town of Silver City into the hub of privatized border security for the western United States has tendrils reaching all the way to the Governor.
Call it fate, Hobson’s choice or destiny, but the more Will tries to flee, the stronger his connection with Billy grows and the more he becomes like his mythical hero as the karmic cycle of history unfolds, almost as if past events of the Lincoln County Wars are overlapping present time. He crosses the line to Vigilante when he shoots his first man down in order to save the Mexican boy’s life, putting him square in the crosshairs of Inkwell and the law. But thanks to the unlikely help of the ancient gunslinger, he is able to stay one step ahead of certain death.
It isn’t long before Will finds out that to cement their political position, BG Dolan and Inkwell have secretly made a deal with the largest cartel in Mexico to reduce what comes across the US border (drugs, immigrants, trafficked humans) by half in exchange for unobstructed cartel passage.
The political power of this reduction in crime is undeniable as people across United States rejoice at the massive drug seizures and secure borders. As Inkwell’s star is on the rise, Will attempts to get to Governor Martinez with what he knows. But Martinez is under tremendous pressure to back the manhunt of Will, and Will’s efforts only serve to endanger those close to him.
The murder of Will’s father figure and mentor Asa, ultimately leads to Will forming an incongruent group of “Regulators” hell bent on setting things right. Conflicts escalate as Will and his Regulators peel back the layers of this political time bomb until he’s declared an enemy of the state of New Mexico by Governor Martinez.
It is only now that Will discovers the true reason for the strange link between himself and Billy the Kid; that he is none other than Billy’s great great grandson who must finish a fight that Billy started back in 1878. At this stage, Will comes to a crossroads and has to make a choice: Abandon his crusade and survive, or press forward toward infamy, knowing his life will end with a bullet.
