I watched "Conclave", directed by Edward Berger as a Singapore Film Society Film Preview, a few days ago. The Singapore release is today (2nd January 2025) in Shaw Theatres. Incidentally, I auditioned for a speaking role in the movie back in 2022. Evidently, I didn't get the role, but I think they have cast someone more suitable. He performed brilliantly. "Conclave" is a compelling political thriller that delves into the clandestine process of selecting a new pope following the sudden death of the pontiff. Ralph Fiennes delivers a masterful performance as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, the reluctant dean tasked with overseeing the conclave. The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Stanley Tucci as the progressive Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as the politically astute Cardinal Tremblay, and Lucian Msamati as the emerging favorite, Cardinal Adeyemi. Berger's direction, complemented by Volker Bertelmann's evocative score, creates an atmosphere thick with suspense and intrigue. The narrative intricately portrays the political machinations, personal ambitions, and strategic maneuverings within the Vatican's hallowed halls. The film's visual composition is striking, with each frame meticulously crafted to enhance the storytelling. While "Conclave" has been lauded for its engrossing plot and exceptional performances, some critics have noted that the film's climax introduces a twist that may seem implausible to certain viewers. Nonetheless, the film has been praised for its ability to balance serious thematic elements with moments of dry wit, making it both thought-provoking and unexpectedly entertaining. Overall, "Conclave" offers a riveting exploration of faith, power, and human frailty, providing audiences with a rare glimpse into the secretive world of Vatican politics. Its blend of historical intrigue and contemporary relevance makes it a standout film of 2024.
