After cheating on her husband, abandoned by her lover, and ignored by the world, a childless, overweight, ordinary, underemployed, failed Hollywood writer and comic -- a breath away from turning fifty -- finds the courage to reset her life and start over again.
SYNOPSIS:
Loosely based on the true story of a woman blowing up her perfectly okay life so she had a reason to get divorced, ‘Cooze’ is a half-hour dramedy pilot set in grimy section of Hollywood in present day Los Angeles centered around hard working class people. Dusty Beach, a super flawed, super childless, super broke and about to turn not-so-super-fifty failed screenwriter and comedian, is forced to start over when she cheats on her totally sweet but bare minimum effort husband. And the fumbling she endures as she tackles the tiny, tragic steps newly divorced women take after shedding the myth of marriage. Dusty, a regular woman from a small town came to Hollywood with big dreams -- to be extraordinary as a comic and screenwriter. Too many years in, she found herself simply -- ordinary. Mainly due to buying into the generational lie of happiness that only comes with having a husband and creating a home. A home she soon discovered, she was the only one sacrificing to keep alive. Lost, lonely, ignored and drained of life, Dusty had to save herself but didn’t know how -- until she met a man with the same scattered ambitions and stalled career. So, she did what desperate souls do – she cheated. Believing he was the better option than her emotionally absent husband. Shocker -- he wasn’t. The affair utterly destroyed Dusty, but became the detonation button she needed to wipe the happily-ever-after dream slate clean, vowing to never again let anything get in her way of being the woman she was always meant to be. Starting over at fifty ain’t easy, but this time tenacious focus and unwavering determination won’t ever let her veer again. Every tiny, harsh leap she takes in life will be done in bravery. Every word she writes will be to counter female societal terrorism. Every award she receives will be her way to fight against mundane normalcy. And every laugh she gets on stage for her brash truthfulness, will smash unforgiving prejudices against women like Dusty who are all too often deemed useless due to their age. Dusty may have had to reset to zero, but the road she walks now, is to become the woman, comic and screenwriter she always knew she could be. A woman finding her true purpose in life not being a wife or mother, but in leading other women to go after their own dreams and to never again feel ashamed for wanting to be extraordinary too. Raging against sexism, misogyny and ageism won’t be easy and people will try and intimidate Dusty, calling her those fun derogatory words. Words that only fill Dusty with courage. Because at the end of the day, being called something that describes the strongest human body part known to the universe, is an honor not an insult. And describes exactly who she is -- a Cooze.
