LEVI'S CHALICE
By Paul Pastore

GENRE: Period Piece, Family
LOGLINE:

After secretly observing the Last Supper, an 11-year old orphan heeds Jesus's instructions and sets out on a dangerous pilgrimage to find his place in the world.

*Based on Pastor Alfred Pirozzoli's faith-based book, LEVI'S CHALICE.

SYNOPSIS:

Jerusalem, 33 AD. LEVI is a skinny 11-year old beggar. Separated from his parents when he was an infant, he has no friends and trusts no one, especially grown-ups. To survive, he steals food and begs for alms. Occasionally he cleans the upper room of a small inn owned by a widower with two lazy teenage daughters. Although "paid" with food, Levi often finds mislaid coins when he cleans.

On the day before Passover, Levi observes a group of merchants in the upper room of the inn. He waits for them to leave, then climbs up unseen into the vacant room. For a few precious minutes he has the room - and its treasure of food, drink and coins - all to himself. Meanwhile, two of Jesus's disciples, PETER and JOHN, ask the innkeeper if he has a room where they, JESUS, and the other Disciples can use for their Passover meal.

Moments later, Levi hears voices and footsteps climbing up the stairs. Too late to escape, he hides under the nearest service cabinet. From this tiny nook he overhears the final secrets Jesus imparts on his Disciples before his arrest and crucifixion: service to others, the covenant of bread and wine, even the foretelling of his betrayal by Judas.

When the meal is over, Jesus dismisses the Disciples. Thinking they have all left, Levi sneaks out from his hiding place only to find Jesus waiting for him. Jesus tells the orphan beggar boy, "Many will abandon me. I will be alone, but only for a moment to fulfill the prophecy, then I will no longer be alone. Such will be the same for you." But before Levi can ask Jesus to explain He disappears.

Alone again, Levi tests the last drops of wine from the Chalice Jesus had passed around to all the Disciples. A warm feeling a love surges through his body, but it's interrupted by the sounds of the innkeeper and his daughters climbing up the stairs. Levi hides the Chalice inside his tattered tunic and escapes out the window.

Later in the marketplace, Levi sees Judas and accuses him of wanting to betray Jesus. Although the traitorous Disciple drags Levi away, the young beggar manages to escape. A CENTURION chases after Levi, but the young beggar gets away when his pursuer crashes into a foul smelling camel.

Having made enemies of Judas and the Centurion, Levi leaves Jerusalem. Guided by the cryptic messages from the Chalice, and armed by an equally mysterious Shepherd's Staff, Levi sets out to find Jesus and learn what He meant about no longer being alone.

Aiding Levi on his quest are several familiar biblical figures, plus one mysterious lame beggar. But even their wisdom and guidance cannot protect Levi from the ever-present prospect of being caught and thrown into a dreaded Roman Work Camp - or worse -- death!
